This paper provides guidance on how to conduct collaborative and participatory risk assessments, paying attention to the human rights of project-affected people. It was written for stakeholders who seek more effective strategies for investigating the human rights impacts of business projects or operations, and who wish to make their human rights impact assessments more inclusive and responsive, or who seek to encourage greater buy-in from other stakeholders.

This briefing note, co-authored with the Danish Institute for Human Rights and the Sciences Po Law School Clinic, outlines a new approach to conducting human rights impact assessments (HRIAs) of business operations or projects, which brings together project-affected people, the company, and other stakeholders to jointly design and implement an assessment.

This LEGEND bulletin considers the impact that new technology can have on documenting land rights and democratising access to land data around the world.

Article 1 - Objectives: "This decree defines principles, rules, and measures to mitigate adverse social impacts and to compensate damages that result from involuntary acquisition or repossession of land and fixed or movable assets, including change in land use, restriction of access to community or natural resources affecting community livelihood and income sources.

As foreign states and corporate entities continue to exert pressures on African countries to acquire land for various investment purposes, Tanzania is not exempted. This case study focuses on the capacity of local communities to monitor biodiversity and resources in Madagascar, Nicaragua, Philippines and Tanzania. It makes a controlled comparison between local community monitoring and trained scientists’ monitoring and conclude that local and indigenous communities generate similar and equally good outputs as the trained scientists, and are much more cost efficient. The cases suggest that it is fully possible to build a cheap and effective MRV system based on community monitoring of Non-Carbon Benefits

This paper uses the case of South Africa’s latest land redistribution strategy known as the Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy, to explore whether, and how, research can have direct and positive impacts on beneficiaries of land reform. The study is situated within the practice of action research: to explore how it can generate knowledge that can be shared back and forth between stakeholders, as well as how it may ignite changes that the participants desire. The findings are that Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy is not meeting the overall goals land reform.

The National Long Term Vision 2030 (Vision 2030) is Zambia's first ever written long-term plan, expressing Zambians’ aspirations by the year 2030. The formulation process utilized both top-down and bottom-up approaches, where various stakeholders at both national and regional level were consulted.The Zambian people’s vision is to become “a prosperous middle income nation by 2030”.

The present Agreement signed by the Government of Canada, the Makivik Corporation (representing the Nunavik Inuit) and the Government of Nunavut settles unresolved issues stemming from the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. A unique feature of this Agreement is its transboundary nature. While the Nunavik Inuit communities are in northern Quebec, the claims are in Nunavut as well as in Newfoundland and Labrador.The Nunavik Inuit Settlement Area is comprised of two areas: the Nunavik Marine Region, and the Labrador portion of the Nunavik Settlement Area.
