This reflection paper focuses on the baobab value chain in the north of Manica Province, and specifically on the interactions between women baobab collectors and Baobab Products Mozambique (BPM), as BPM seeks to develop its inclusive business model.

For the last three years, the commercial interactions between BPM and the communities, particularly the women who collect the baobab fruit, have taken place in the context of a LEGEND-funded project implemented by Micaia Foundation. Micaia’s project sought to address two central problems:

Evaluation of FAO’s Contribution to Cambodia. Although Cambodia is rapidly transitioning to a more industrialised economy, the country is still among the poorest in Southeast Asia, and the risk of sliding back into poverty remains high, especially for rural households. The goal of FAO’s programme in Cambodia has been to contribute to the eradication of poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition while promoting sustainable natural resource management. The 2018 country programme evaluation highlighted FAO’s comparative advantage – as a trusted purveyor of data and technical advice.

Agriculture in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is diverse, and has great potential to revitalize the economy of the countries in the region via improved productivity (efficiency) and higher total yield for food, fodder and fibre crops. Conservation agriculture can rise to the major challenge of making sustainable intensification of production systems a reality.

This evaluation assessed strategic positioning of the first phase of the FAO-Turkey programme, its results and contributions, sustainability, as well as coherence and catalytic effects. It noted that the programme facilitated a beneficial collaboration between the Turkish Government and regional and international experts. It however found that the absence of a real results-oriented design has led to the lack of programme coherence, with the outputs and outcomes not leading to the goals initially envisaged for the programme.

The final report of Mid-term evaluation of EU-IFAD Grant project "Restoration of degraded land for food security and poverty reduction in East Africa and the Sahel: taking successes in land restoration to scale".

This study investigates the role of the different institutional actors involved in the development and implementation of land use policies in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The work is based on interviews with key informants from different administrative levels and these results are compared to the relevant policy documents. While the constitution prescribes a participatory policy development process, our results show that in reality policies are made at the highest level and implemented in a top-down approach from the higher to the lower administrative levels.

This publication provides conceptual material for use in the preparation of national regulations for the management, development, use and protection of freshwater resources. The conceptual material is arranged according to the principal functions of water resources management, and it is complemented and illustrated by examples of original water management regulations. These have been drawn from a wide variety of mostly English-speaking countries.

The five articles in these newsletter are a good reflection of what FAO does on a day to day basis in Lesotho. Our work spans from high policy and strategic level engagements to downstream initiatives with rural communities. The human interest stories shared in these articles show the importance of healthy natural resource base in improving and sustaining the livelihoods of the rural poor.
