General
Wetlands perform a great number of socio-economic and ecological functions. Nonetheless, only few wetlands are under effective protection in Panama. UNDP envisages an array of measures designed to manage protected mangroves and other wetlands over an area of 13,800 ha. The measures are to be monitored and assessed with regard to their carbon dynamics. The project shall give greater priority to wetlands within Panama's national protected area system and will improve the capacity of the national environmental authority to manage protected areas.
