Mozambique is already vulnerable to extreme weather events and climate change is projected to exacerbate their frequency and intensity. The occurrence of cyclones and flooding has increased in recent years and the trend is expected to continue. The country’s coast—where 60 percent of the population, the three biggest cities, and critical infrastructure are situated—is most exposed to climate change-related risks, including damage from cyclones and projected sea level rise.

This report focuses on one such innovative frontier: the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture, specifically in predicting seed yield. The focal point of our exploration is the automated counting of seeds in forages using DL algorithms.

At the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), it is imperative for African countries to foster unity and collaboration with other developing nations to realise successful outcomes for the continent’s food systems transformation agenda. Key resources for the Africa Group of Negotiators and other stakeholders include the African Union Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy (2022-2032) (African Union Climate Strategy) and the Nairobi Declaration to identify concrete priorities and actions for climate-resilient agriculture in Africa.

A clear consensus has emerged that innovations are important for adapting to drought and overcoming other biophysical limitations in smallholder farming systems; however, women are notably marginalized from agricultural innovations. We examine whether and how gendered roles and responsibilities shape the adoption and usage of improved wheat varieties and simultaneously uncover opportunities to address and lessen gender-based differences in agricultural innovations.

Over the past 60 years, food systems in South Asia have undergone rapid economic and socio-cultural transformations, with both considerable similarities and differences within and between nations (Pingali and Abraham, 2022). Early agrifood systems transformations were led by an intensification paradigm that has increased crop productivity by heavily relying on intensive input and resource use, particularly chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and groundwater.

Agriculture remains the primary livelihood in Ghana, marked by a growing emphasis on cocoa production nationwide. Existing research highlights the importance of supplementing rainfed cocoa production with irrigation. Simultaneously, mining has emerged as a key driver of the country's economic growth. However, there is an urgent need to assess the measurable impacts of cocoa production with supplemental irrigation and mining on water resources sustainability and quality.

There are many steps needed to get food on plates— all of which take resources and time. Yet we do not know how different household members are contributing their time. Neither do we have simple tools to measure their contributions to household tasks in household surveys. The aim of the current study is to develop and test a tool to understand how household tasks—ranging from agricultural to food preparation and care activities—are allocated across household members.
