Principles for socially inclusive digital tools for smallholder farmers: A guide

Décembre, 2021
Global

The digital ecosystem and its actors have increasing influence over how food is produced, what food people buy, and the flow of information among farmers, supply chain actors, and consumers. Efforts to transform food systems towards sustainability, including climate change resilience and mitigation, similarly rely on digital resources and offer the opportunity to scale up best practices rapidly at low cost.

Framework Report for incorporating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) elements in Climate Information Services (CIS)

Décembre, 2021
Global

Climate Information Services have an opportunity to increase smallholder farmers' resilience against climate change and climate variability whilst enhancing their livelihoods. The AICCRA Zambia project through the agricultural data hub, training and drought and flood indicators provide solid evidence for enhancing smallholder farmer households. For the CIS to be gender inclusive and promote resilience for male and female farmers, development practitioners must ask questions at different stages to ensure that gender considerations and barriers are removed.

Using a systems approach for drought risk financing solutions in Senegal

Décembre, 2021
Senegal

The index-based livestock insurance (IBLI), since the time it was launched in 2010 in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya and Ethiopia, has evolved into drought risk financing solutions (DRFS). This evolution is characterized by development from a micro product implemented, as potential social protection tools, to a regional level de-risking instrument for pastoralists in the Horn of Africa. There have also been demands for DRFS to rise to several other challenges such as conflict, access to health and market services (feed, fodder) that are being faced in the drylands of Africa.

Scaling Gender-Smart Agriculture through Sustainable Finance in the Sahel

A rapid Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) assessment was conducted on 20 agri-food companies supported by the Gender-Smart Accelerator in Senegal. As the Accelerator-technical assistance is implemented, companies are likely to double climate change mitigation and adaptation impacts. Major interventions driving changes are: climate information services (CIS), water and soil management (Adaptation); agroforestry, efficient fertilizers use, and renewable energy (Mitigation); improved ag-practices and food loss reduction (Productivity).

Women's voice and agency in choosing assets: A new study on MGNREGA in India

Décembre, 2021
India

In 2005, India passed the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA, “the Act”), a law guaranteeing all rural households 100 days of work at a minimum wage through the building of durable assets, which created one of the largest anti-poverty programs in the world. Now known as the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA (MGNREGA), a notable feature of the program is that it envisions a democratic, bottom-up process of choosing which durable assets would be built within a community.

Climate Smart Crop-Small Ruminant Value Chain: a Rapid Assessment of Gender Gaps and Opportunities In Doyogena, SNNPR, Ethiopia

Décembre, 2021
Ethiopia

The majority of smallholder farmers in Ethiopia depend on rainfall-fed subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods and are highly vulnerable to climate change and variability. To address the negative impacts of climate change, climate-smart agriculture technologies are implemented and practiced in Doyogena climate-smart landscape.
