The papers are grouped into four categories: land management practices for intensive agriculture; overcoming soil constraints; technology adoption; and planned research and development.

The International Expert Consultation on Non-Wood Forest Products, hosted by the Ministry of Forestry, Government of Indonesia, was held in Yogyakarta, 17-27 January 1995. This was the first world-level meeting exclusively to draw attention on the problems and potentials of non-wood forest products.

This issue of Unasylva commemorates 50 years of FAO's experience in and commitment to international forestry development. Notwithstanding this focus, the issue is essentially forward-looking. Articles written by senior officers of the Forestry Department consider key issues facing world forestry today, and challenges for the future. Lessons are also drawn from past experience.
