In the context of developing a practicable and cost effective method for obtaining a country’s forest area by remote sensing, the computer processing of NOAA AVHRR HRPT data covering Liberia was investigated. The only cloud-free scene then recorded turned out to be severely and unevenly affected by atmospheric haze. To mitigate the effects of this, the country was divided into six areas (strata) of more uniform haze conditions.

Dans de nombreuses régions du monde, les ressources en eau de plus en plus limitées et la mauvaise utilisation de l’eau douce mettent en péril le développement durable. Plus des deux tiers de l’eau prélevée dans les fleuves, lacs et nappes aquifères étant utilisés pour l’irrigation, l’agriculture est de plus en plus considérée comme la soupape de sécurité du système.

This document contains the papers presented at the Symposium on Biology, Stock Assessment and Exploitation of Small Pelagic Fish Species in the African Great Lakes Region. The symposium, jointly organized by the FINNIDA/FAO/AGFUND project Research for the management of fisheries on Lake Tanganyika (LTR) and the FAO/UNDP project Inland Fisheries Planning, Development and Management in Eastern/Central/Southern Africa (IFIP), was held in Bujumbura, Burundi from 25 to 28 November 1992.

Para que los proyectos para el desarrollo reduzcan la pobreza rural tendrán que restablecer el equilibrio entre las mujeres y sus recursos forestales. Esta publicación describe la importancia que tienen par alas mujeres los productos forestales, las difficultades que ellas experimentan actualmente cuando intentan obtenerlos, y lo que se puede hacer para mejorar la situación.

EL presente nmero de Unasylva se centra en la evaluacin de los recursos forestales a nivel mundial llevada a cabo recientemente por la FAO, en la que 1990 ha sido utilizado como ao de referencia (una evaluacin similar se realiz hace un decenio).

Over the past two decades, perspectives on the role of the forest for society have evolved and broadened dramatically; the relatively narrow official view of the forest as primarily a source of wood and a form of protection for upland water resources has been seriously questioned and sometimes even violently opposed in favour of an approach that reflects a wider range of present and future opportunities and demands from forests and forest resources.
