Gender inequality persists in Burundi’s agricultural sector, especially in the bean value chain dominated by women. Women often have less access to improved seeds and to productive technologies. Interventions dubbed “gender-responsive plant breeding” have been launched to develop new varieties to address the gender gaps in variety adoption.

The evaluation function of the Independent Advisory and Evaluation Services (IAES), is executing the 2024 evaluations of the three Science Groups (SGs)—Systems Transformation (ST), Resilient Agrifood Systems (RAFS), and Genetic Innovation (GI).

The goal of HER+ is to build the economic resilience of women to climate change challenges in agri-food systems (AFS) through gender equality and social inclusion. In February 2023, the HER+ team studied how gender norms constrain women’s economic resilience to climate change challenges among fisherfolk in Muleba district of Kagera region in Tanzania.

Spanning four villages- Amei, Lolera, Lembapuli and Lesoit- and covering an expansive 81,237 hectares, the ALLOLE shared grazing land cluster stands as the largest in Kiteto District, Tanzania.

Progress toward reducing global hunger has stalled since the mid-2010s. In fact, hunger is on the rise again, driven by slowing economic growth and protracted conflict, intensified by the impacts of climate change and economic shocks in many low- and middle-income countries.

Livestock route and related resources mapping, understanding their status and better protection of the routes in the pastoral areas are the first steps towards developing the areas.

The 2023 efforts of ISDC, SPIA, and IAES/Evaluation Function, underpinned by IAES operational support, reflect a productive year providing independent advising and evaluative and impact evidence in CGIAR's research and innovation landscape.
