This Guide is complementary to the Interlaken Group's 'Respecting Land and Forest Rights: a Guide for Companies'. It provides guidance on what companies can do to reduce risk through improve tenure governance in land-based investment, reflecting the principles of responsible governance of land tenure set out in the VGGT. It provides a more manageable presentation of the VGGT, along with steps to ensure that a company acts consistently with them and includes thorough due diligence on the tenure rights of project-affected communities.

Report based on fieldwork in Chisumbanje seeks to understand: 1) the interest and role of the Zimbabwe Government and its contribution to the first large-scale private investments undertaken by GreenFuel in Chisumbanje; 2) the impact of the project on local communities’ land rights and livelihoods; 3) the role of the local institutions in facilitating and mediating investment, particularly on land; 4) the capacity of local and national institutions to structure a land agreement palatable to the local communities; and 5) the role of GreenFuel as the land user.

Security of land tenure and property rights has received much attention in recent years. While appetite for land reform initiatives is not new, investment is increasing steadily, as evidence emerges that secure tenure is key to achieving economic growth, food security and other development goals.

This publication contains the struggles of four cases presented by the aggrieved communities in Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and deliberated by an international panel of experts during the Asian People’s Land Rights Tribunal. A set of recommendations for the communities as well as national government and international organizations, are addresses in this publication.
