General Equilibrium Effects of Land Market Restrictions on Labor Market : Evidence from Wages in Sri Lanka

Taking advantage of a historical quasi-experiment in Sri Lanka, this paper provides evidence on the effects of land market restrictions on wages and its spatial pattern. The empirical specification is derived from a general equilibrium model that predicts that the adverse effects of land market restrictions on wages will be less in remote locations. For identification, the study exploits the effects of historical malaria prevalence on the incidence of land restrictions through its effects on "crown land".

An appropriate rural investment climate (RIC) is essential for rural businesses to be successful and generate employment and income in their communities. Improving the investment climate could facilitate income-generation activities in both farm and nonfarm sectors, thus reducing rural poverty. Nonfarm sector focused growth, combined with agricultural growth, and has been shown by Delgado et al. (1998) to have a significant impact on the local economy through the generation of employment and income.

Since mid-1970s, a great number of rural-urban migrants are converging towards Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, and secondary towns, putting strain on land, especially of urban fringes. This is the case of Tumba Sector, a suburb of Butare Town, which attracts many people searching land for various uses. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the land market process in Tumba Sector. Data used in this paper were collected through desk study, survey and from non-structured interview held with the Tumba Land Bureau Officer.

Most of agricultural land in Slovakia is, even after 6 years from the entry of Slovakia into the EU, leased. According to the Structural census of farms (2001), the lease of agricultural land represents 96%, in 2010 it was 91% (EUROSTAT, 2010).

La pregunta que guió este trabajo fue ¿Cuáles son los resultados de las entregas directas de tierras realizadas por el INCORA por medio de la expedición de la Ley 160 de 1994? A partir de esta pregunta, el objetivo fundamental que se trazó fue analizar dos entregas de tierras realizadas por el INCORA en el municipio de Córdoba, Quindío en el marco de la Ley 160 de 1994. Este análisis se hizo desde el punto de vista de diferentes visiones teóricas y de historia política, social y económica que se han tenido sobre el problema de la distribución de la propiedad rural en Colombia.
