In this interview, Augustine Ayantunde from ILRI introduced an ILRI-led project on 'integrated management of rainwater in mixed crop-livestock integrated systems' (in the Volta river basin). The project aims to evaluate and test best fit rainwater management strategies in Ghana and Burkina Faso. According to Ayantunde, the approach of the project is not 'business as usual.' This paper is an attempt to draw together and synthesise as much of the existing documentation as is possible within a limited time period, analyse it systematically, and draw out the main conclusions, lessons learned, and gaps in knowledge. The report tries to identify which RWM innovations have worked when, where and why; what did not work out very well, and why; and what lessons can be extracted from past experience to guide CPWF research in the Nile over the next 4–5 years.

Inundation and severe flooding in the coastal areas is a frequent occurrence in Bangladesh. This leads to loss of life and property as well as severe impacts on livelihoods. The government of Bangladesh has been investing steadily in coastal zone management through construction and rehabilitation of polders. This project is about water governance and community based management of polders in coastal zones in Bangladesh. The challenges facing the polder communities are complex and similar to those faced by many communities in which water is used for multiple purposes.
