Addresses the redistribution of property rights in land from large to small farmers. A policy framework for redistributive land reform is outlined within which the competing paradigms can actually compete there where it matters: on the ground.

Recent environmental assessments have highlighted the extent of land degradation inAustralia and the significant costs involved in addressing it. With projected investment costsrunning into tens of billions of dollars, it is not surprising that greater attention is now beingfocussed on who should pay. One idea gathering significant momentum has been theimposition of an environmental levy.

In contrast to most Latin American countries with high land concentration, 1 Guatemala has been unwilling to consider re-distributive agrarian reform.2 One alternative proposed, therefore, for improving access to land for the rural poor is to make the land market more accessible. The following sections will describe Guatemala’s agrarian structure and land market, and assess the various land market programs implemented in Guatemala since the 1950s, focusing mainly on those undertaken in the 1980s and 90s.

In 1997, CARE-Bangladesh undertook a livelihood security assessment of urban slum households in the cities of Tongi, Khulna and Bogra. Based on the findings of that study and a review of secondary literature, the SHAHAR (Supporting Household Activities for Health, Assets and Revenue) project was conceptualized and designed.

This paper explores the impact of natural resources on development. It uses new data on natural resources to show that, contrary to the popular ‘resource curse’ hypothesis, resource abundance in itself is not negative for a country’s economy.

This report recounts the experiences of 130 women from various regions, ethnic groups, religions, and social classes in Kenya who have had their property rights flouted because they are women.The report presents evidence that women are excluded from inheriting, evicted from their lands and homes by in-laws, stripped of their possessions, and forced to engage in risky sexual practices in order to keep their property. When they divorce or separate from their husbands, they are often expelled from their homes with only their clothing.
