The Transforming Agrifood Systems in South Asia (TAFSSA) district agrifood systems assessment aims to provide a reliable, accessible, and integrated evidence base that links farm production, market access, dietary patterns, climate risk responses, and natural resource management with gender as a cross-cutting issue in rural areas of Bangladesh, India, and Nepal.

Women are underrepresented in leadership and have more limited influence than men over decisions in climate change governance processes at multiple scales. The CGIAR Initiative on Gender Equality (HER+) has explored public and private sector approaches to increase women’s agency and leadership in agrifood system governance with the goal of increasing women’s climate resilience.

Over the past centuries, the mid-hills of Nepal have been inhabited and cultivated by nomads, settlers and in the recent decades intensified farming systems. The system is constantly under systemic change due to farmers own actions and policies within the confines of biophysical resource envelope.

Foresight research plays a key role in addressing uncertainty, informing decision making, and enhancing the relevance and credibility of policies. The scientific knowledge of foresight literature provides a better understanding of complexity, building resilience, and setting direction in a rapidly changing world.

The Ghana Cluster of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project, led by the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and its partners are working on an Early Warning and Rapid Response System for Pests and Diseases (EWRRS-PD) to enhance communication, data sharing, and preparedness against new risks.

Codesign was a major focus of work package 1 that deals with the Transdisciplinary co-creation of innovations in Agroecological Living Landscapes (ALLs) in the target countries during 2023. This report provides an overview of progress achieved in 2023 with respect to codesign of technological innovations in 7 countries (Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Peru, Laos).

Growing attention to food environment policies has been observed to address the multiple aspects of malnutrition (Kumar et al. 2023). In India, interventions promoting sustainable agriculture, small-scale farming, and equitable access to markets have been initiated to address the food and nutrition security of economically vulnerable groups.

The last irrigation policy of Nepal (2003) acknowledged that the traditional focus of irrigation development in Nepal has been on run-off river-based surface water irrigation. To counter the problems of seasonal low flows of rivers, groundwater resources were regarded mostly as a supplementary or conjunctive irrigation source that could extend irrigation year-round.
