Shrimp is Bangladesh’s main agricultural export and makes a substantial contribution to the economy of southern Bangladesh, but the sector has a checkered history. Bangladesh’s shrimp production and exports have been in steady decline, since peaking in the early 2010’s. Most shrimp exports from Bangladesh are used by the food service and niche ethnic markets in Europe.

We are pleased to report that NEXUS Gains has made substantial progress since its launch in April 2022, as outlined in our annual technical report. Energy, food production, and ecosystems are driven by water, which is central to our nexus approach. To ensure the sustainability of the program, we have invested considerable time in building teams and partnerships in our target basins.

The Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project is a three-year initiative funded by the World Bank and implemented in six (6) African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Senegal and Zambia.

The first series of Munda Make Over disseminated information on climate change adaptation, farming as a business, financial inclusion, and improved livelihoods to 654,751 people in Zambia. The information was disseminated on national television between December 2022 and June 2023.

The Central American Dry Corridor (CADC) is among the most climate-vulnerable regions worldwide. Climate change, commonly referred to as a “threat multiplier” of pre-existing socioeconomic issues, already undermines rural livelihoods by reducing agricultural yields and income opportunities.

The Department of Crop Production coordinated with the International Rice Research Institute in Vietnam to develop this technical guideline for rice-producing provinces in the Red River Delta. The guideline focused on reducing inputs, improving efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change for rice production.

Agri-food systems approaches have gained international recognition over the last years. The role of livestock—both in mixed crop-livestock and pastoral systems—in sustainable agri-food systems transformation remains contested.

Context

Sustainable intensification aims to increase production and improve livelihoods of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Many farmers, however, are caught in a vicious cycle of low productivity and lack of incentives to invest in agricultural inputs.

This report summarizes findings from a study on digital tool use among rice farmers in Vietnam for the Inclusive Digital Tools Project (ATDT) of the Agroecological Transitions for Building Resilient and Inclusive Agricultural and Food Systems (TRANSITIONS) program. Results show that few digital tools focused on rice production in Vietnam provide technical advice and performance assistance.

Amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.) is the most consumed leaf vegetable in Benin. A study carried out in south Benin have shown that the production of this vegetable is severely limited by insect pest pressure.
