This paper examines how rural transformation in Uzbekistan alters gender norms and roles and, consequently, affects women’s involvement in agriculture. We focus on the role that contextual factors, particularly kinship relations, government goals, and institutional structures each contribute to rural transformation and male outmigration, and how these, in turn, increase women’s work in wheat production and processing. The wheat is the most important crop in the country which has the highest area coverage (35%) in Uzbekistan.

In Southeast Asia, access to improved forages remains a challenge for smallholder farmers and limits livestock production. We compared seed exchange networks supporting two contrasting livestock production systems to identify bottlenecks in seed availability and determine the influences of the market, institutions, and cultural context of seed exchange, using interview-based methods for ‘seed tracing’ and network analysis.

CONTEXT
Colombia has a total of 27.2 million heads of cattle, ranking fourth among the Latin American countries. Identifying sustainable strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) will help the Colombian government meet their goal of a 51% reduction in national emissions by 2030. Estimation of yield gaps for identifying the potential to improve cattle farms productivity and efficiency in Colombia help on reducing the GHGE intensities from the cattle sector.
OBJECTIVE

Agriculture is the mainstay of Uganda’s economy, contributing about 25% of the GDP, a third of the export earnings and almost all the country’s food requirements. Yet, the sector still faces various challenges that affect production and the income derived from it. Systemic issues impact smallholder farmers' livelihoods across markets, land, skills, and capital, with cross-cutting social exclusion issues.

As Rwanda is expected to return to its rapid growth trajectory following the COVID-19 pandemic, agriculture will continue to play a central role in the structural transformation of the entire economy. To this end, the Government of Rwanda continues to invest in the agricultural sector by building on Strategic Plans for the Transformation of Agriculture (PSTAs) that began in the early 2000s. The challenging question is how to prioritize public expenditures across a broad portfolio of policies and programs. Ambitious plans, whether in the short or long term, require difficult decisions.

This is a qualitative study on institutional innovations that the Inter Aide France (IAF) project has pioneered as part of its people-centred land management activities in Hadiya and Kembata-Tembaro (HKT) zones of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region of Ethiopia. This is an offshoot of an ongoing partnership between IAF and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT.

This is a summary of the deliberations, emerging issues and action points from the high-level regional conference on land and conflict in the East and Horn of Africa. The objective of the Conference was to facilitate the development of a regional agenda and national policy priorities in land conflict and governance in the region. The Conference facilitated discussion and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice and the building of effective institutions.

Over the last three decades, the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has come up with multiple development plans, policies and strategy documents and legal instruments that intend to transform the agricultural sector in general and the livestock sector in particular. In the past four years, the government’s focus seemed to shift from agriculture based economic transformation to industrialization focused national economic growth, while also recognizing the huge socio-economic potential of the livestock sector.

Participatory engagement of communities is key to establish clearer understanding of existing challenges, collectively identify plausible solutions, and to ensure sustainable adoption of innovative technologies and practices. Community Conversations (CCs) offer unique opportunities to facilitate dialogue among groups of a community and key local government and research institutions on selected topics of interest.

In both developing and developed countries, there is increasing in terest in adopting more inclusive and problem-solving participatory re search methods. In its endeavor to improve agricultural productivity, food security, and livelihoods, Nigeria has pursued several approaches in fertilizer policy. Most of these approaches revolved around variants of government-financed subsidy programs. This paper assesses the history of fertilizer policies in Nigeria and the tenets of the fertilizer policies in two recent national agricultural policy documents – the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) (2010/11-2016) and the Agricultural Promotion Policy (APP) (2016-2020).

Livestock production in Ethiopia is predominated by extensive production systems where animals graze in communal grazing lands that exposes to disease transmission and indiscriminate breeding. Intensive stall feeding occurs, mostly in peri-urban settings, with cows mainly fed on straw and limited fresh forages. Animal movement within the country for herd replacement poses disease risk due to lack of movement control.
