Assessing complementary synergies for integrated crop–livestock systems under conservation agriculture in Tunisian dryland farming systems

Décembre, 2022
Global

The aim of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to measure the technical efficiency of mixed crop-livestock (CL) smallholder producers operating under conservation agriculture systems in Tunisian rainfed areas. The second objective is to explore complementarities, synergies, and economies of diversification across the different production system components of these crop-livestock producers using the cross-partial derivative framework of output variables in the distance function.

Alternative cropping and feeding options to enhance sustainability of mixed crop-livestock farms in Bangladesh

Décembre, 2022
Bangladesh

We investigated alternative cropping and feeding options for large (>10 cows), medium (5–10 cows) and small (≤4 cows) mixed crop – livestock farm types, to enhance economic and environmental performance in Jhenaidha and Meherpur districts – locations with increasing dairy production – in south western Bangladesh. Following focus group discussions with farmers on constraints and opportunities, we collected baseline data from one representative farm from each farm size class per district (six in total) to parameterize the whole-farm model FarmDESIGN.

Décembre, 2022
Zimbabwe

Work Package Three (WP3) of the Agroecology Initiative (AE-I) aims to enhance the integration of agroecology principles in businesses as a way to facilitate the transition of agrifood systems towards agroecology. To achieve this, WP3 aims to collaborate with selected private sector companies to develop and implement business models (BMs) that support or are compatible with the agroecological transition further. This report outlines the re-engagement activities carried out by the AE-I team in Zimbabwe with the private enterprises between June and August 2023.

Spatially targeting conservation and farm mechanization in Southern Africa: Insights from multicriteria analysis

Décembre, 2022
Global

The uptake of conservation agriculture and farm mechanization in Southern Africa has been slow and low. As a result, most smallholder farmers continue to grow crops under degraded soils using conventional tools and human powered farm operations. This leads to low productivity. Therefore, spatially visualizing areas where conservation agriculture and farm mechanization can be targeted can be crucial to guide targeting and scaling.

Livestock and sustainable food systems: Status, trends, and priority actions

Digital innovations, for instance, in extension, finance, and logistics can play an important role in agri-food systems. They can address bottlenecks in access to extension services, marketing systems, suitable financial products, reliable weather information, transport services and logistics as well as supply chain management. For the benefits of digital innovations to be realized, the innovations must be adopted at scale.
