Synthesis report of two workshops conducted on Engaging Ethiopian Universities in Up-scaling Community-Based Breeding Programs

Décembre, 2020
Ethiopia

Two consecutive workshops were conducted on 20th and 27th of July 2021 at Bahir Dar and Debrezeit, respectively. The workshops were aimed at engaging Ethiopian Universities in up-scaling of community based breeding programs (CBBP) through incorporation of CBBP in animal breeding curriculum and being involved in the implementation of CBBP in the vicinity of the Universities.

Production models and technical assistance towards sustainable livestock in the department of Caquetá

Décembre, 2020
Netherlands

This info note summarizes the objectives, scope, and intervention logic of the livestock component of the PDET Routes project, which is implemented in four municipalities in Caquetá. The conditions that converge there, such as the high and growing rate of deforestation, environmental impacts, productive orientation, and types of land tenure, enable the implementation of sustainable livestock production models and the development of technical assistance programs in the productive, economic, social, and environmental spheres.

Risk of Climate-Related Impacts on Global Rangelands - A Review and Modelling Study

Décembre, 2020
Kenya

Climate change threatens the ability of global rangelands to provide food, support livelihoods and deliver important ecosystems services. The extent and magnitude of potential impacts are however poorly understood. In this study, we review the risk of climate impacts along the rangeland systems food supply chain. We also present results from biophysical modelling simulations and spatial data analyses to identify where and to what extent rangelands may be at climatic risk.

Forage-fed insects as food and feed source: Opportunities and constraints of edible insects in the tropics

Décembre, 2020
Global

Farmed insects can provide an alternative protein source for humans, livestock, and fish, while supporting adaptation to climate change, generating income for smallholder farmers, and reducing the negative impacts of conventional food production, especially in the tropics. However, the quantity, nutritional quality and safety of insects greatly relies on their feed intake. Tropical forages (grasses and legumes) can provide a valuable and yet untapped source of feed for several farmed insect species.

6.3 million euros were allocated to increase the adoption of silvopastoral systems and sustainable technologies in the Colombian Amazon region

Décembre, 2020
Global

Within the framework of the Development Programs with a Territorial Approach (PDET) Routes for Stabilization, program of the European Fund for Peace, 6.3 million euros in financing was obtained. The livestock component will benefit 370 production units (farms), 560 hectares and 540 mainly small and medium-sized producers. CGIAR innovations key for the achievement of this outcome were based on the research on silvopastoral systems, environmental and economic benefits, in terms of biodiversity, soil health, forage quality, income, and livelihoods.
