Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.
Made up of 54 member States, and playing a dual role as a regional arm of the UN and as a key component of the African institutional landscape, ECA is well positioned to make unique contributions to address the Continent’s development challenges.

Establishment of an African university consortium for land information systems
The land in a continent as Africa is an economic resource, a basis of wealth promoting growth and human development, and a tool of empowering and governing. Most of native Africans are peasants and have their main living and fundamental infrastructures based on land and land resources. Then, land administrating and management which are largely tied to the diversity of the local cultural and traditional practicies should be enhanced in a good and scientific manner.
Sustainable development report on Africa I: managing land-based resources for sustainable development
The lack of balanced development where economic, social and environmental dimensions are given due consideration for long term sustainable development has led the international community to consider different paradigms of development. The multiple challenges to development in Africa have necessitated the use of a holistic approach that integrates economic, social and environmental dimensions, and generates new knowledge, policies and actions.
Regional assessment studies on land policy in central eastern, north, southern and west Africa : synthesis report
This workshop took place from 27 to 29 March 2006. The discussions were informed by an issues/discussion paper. The meeting brought together representatives from African governments, regional economic communities, and civil society including farmers’ organizations, African private sector, centres of excellence and development partners.
