En el presente documento se examinan diversos casos de proyectos en que se aplicaron enfoques o principios basados en los modos de vida sostenibles y que, como consecuencia de ello, surtieron un efecto concreto en la reducción de la pobreza. Puesto que no se trata de un estudio comparativo entre éste y otros tipos de enfoques, no se han tomado en consideración casos de planteamientos más “tradicionales”.

An interdisciplinary ‘nexus’ approach is necessary to ensure that food, energy and climate are jointly addressed, trade-offs considered, and appropriate safeguards are put in place. These issues will not be addressed through a single initiative. Because of its importance, scope and complexity, this challenge must be met through participation of a broad constituency of interested parties. This demands a multi partner international effort to implement energy-smart solutions in a non fragmented and cost effective way.

Este mes, la celebración anual del Día Mundial del Agua tendrá lugar el 22 de marzo. El tema del Día de este año es Agua para las ciudades: respondiendo al desafío urbano. En el presente número examinamos algunos de los retos planteados por los recursos hídricos a causa de la rapidez de las migraciones, y estudiamos una posible solución para intensificar el aprovechamiento de dichos recursos.

With the continual rise of global commodity prices and increasing population pressures worldwide, the future of agriculture is looking increasingly unstable. As a result of this escalating demand and intensification of unsustainable agricultural techniques, natural resources are facing an increasing threat of depletion.

This issue offers seventeen articles distributed among the following aspects of the climate change theme: two articles on Climate Change Impact; three articles on Climate Change Mitigation; nine articles on Climate Change Adaptation; and three articles that straddle all aspects of the climate change topic. The edition also presents specific information on aspects of climate change issues in individual countries including Cameroon, Chad, Ghana, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Zimbabwe

The continuing and rapid degradation of rural watersheds has been a major concern for governments and civil society in Asia and the Pacific region. A root cause is the segmented management of land and water resources. This has been exacerbated by the cumulative and linked effects of an increase in demand for food, fuel and water due to population growth, competition for scarce land resources from biofuel production and a shift in preference for protein-rich diets. The expected adverse impact of climate change in the coming decades will most likely worsen the situation.

This case study is one of a series of publications produced by the Forest Harvesting, Trade and Marketing Branch of FAO as an effort to promote environmentally sound forest harvesting and engineering practices. The purpose of these studies is to highlight both the promise of environmentally sound forest harvesting technologies as a component of sustainable forest management, and the constraints that must be overcome in order to assure widespread adoption of those technologies.

The FAO Guidelines: Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems (SAFA), provide an international reference for sustainable management, monitoring and reporting in food and agriculture at all levels of the supply chain. SAFA is not a sustainability index, nor a sustainability standard, nor a labelling tool.
