Unasylva consacre son numéro à la diversité biologique des forêts et à sa conservation et sa gestion durable. L'un des points cardinaux de son message est que le nombre n'est pas le seul critère d'évaluation.

Information on water use is required for political, economic and academic decision making on issues affecting everyone?s life. Owing to fi nancial constraints, it is diffi cult to have complete and comprehensive information on everything related to water. Techniques and methodologies are, therefore, used to affordably maximize control. To improve understanding of the different techniques and methodologies used to generate information, the AQUASTAT team sent thematic questionnaires to approximately 170 countries in April 2009.

The future state of forests and forestry in Ethiopia are discussed in the light of current issues in the sector. The implications for the environment and for the success of forestry objectives are discussed.

An overview of NWFP statistics in Rwanda. It emphasises the main species which include medical plants (and their uses), fodder plants, decorative plants, honey producing plants, fruit plants and oil plants. Furthermore, the report also presents information on mushrooms, bushmeat, fishing and activities related to ecotourism.

FAO has been coordinating global forest resources assessments every five to ten years since 1946 (FAO, 2006), with the objective to provide a periodic global and uniform picture of existing forests, derived trends and statistics. Especially FAO’s periodically reported deforestation rates enjoy a high degree of public attention and are widely cited in literature.

Over the coming 35 years, agriculture will face an unprecedented confluence of pressures, including a 30 percent increase in the global population, intensifying competition for increasingly scarce land, water and energy resources, and the existential threat of climate change. To provide for a population projected to reach 9.3 billion in 2050 and support changing dietary patterns, estimates are that food production will need to increase from the current 8.4 billion tonnes to almost 13.5 billion tonnes a year.

This issue of Unasylva considers some of the issues related to forest-dwelling and forest-dependent people, and particularly their role in and relationship to sustainable forest management.
