This study investigates the impact of the Golden Quadrilateral highway project on the urban and rural growth of Indian manufacturing. The Golden Quadrilateral project upgraded the quality and width of 5,846 km of roads in India. The study uses a difference-in-difference estimation strategy to compare non-nodal districts based on their distance from the highway system. For the organized portion of the manufacturing sector, the Golden Quadrilateral project led to improvements in both urban and rural areas of non-nodal districts located 0-10 km from the Golden Quadrilateral.

This paper analyzes real estate market dynamics over the past decade in the city of Ahmedabad, India, with a view to improving the living conditions of the large population living in slums. The paper combines census data, the National Sample Survey, and slum household surveys to review the demand side of the market. Satellite photography was used to estimate the production of both formal and informal housing over the past ten years. Analysis of the execution of the development plan for the Ahmedabad region and town planning schemes shows how the system of housing supply has evolved.

This year's edition of the little green data book includes a focus story on oceans and its ecosystem services, as well as estimates of global marine fisheries wealth accounts, a first step in capturing the value of this important resource stock. A new set of ocean-related indicators are also introduced, highlighting the role of oceans in economic development and providing policy makers the information to make better decisions for the sustainable management of oceans.

The objective of the Nepal Investment Climate Assessment (ICA) is to evaluate the investment climate in Nepal in all its dimensions and promote policies to strengthen the private sector. The investment climate is made up of many dimensions that shape the opportunities for investments, employment creation, and growth of private firms. Such dimensions include factor markets, product markets, infrastructure services, and the macroeconomic, legal, regulatory, and institutional framework.

This paper summarizes the policy-relevant insights of a generation of research on scale economies. Scale economies in production are of three types: internal economies associated with large plants, localization economies that come from sharing of inputs and infrastructure and from greater competition among firms, and urbanization economies that are generated through diversity and knowledge spillovers. The benefits (and costs) of localization and urbanization are together called “external (dis) economies” because they arise due to factors outside any single household, farm or firm.

Release of the final report of the International Comparison Program (ICP) and publication of new estimates of purchasing power parities (PPPs) in World Development Indicators 2008 are an important statistical milestone. The estimates offer a consistent and comprehensive set of data on the cost of living in developed and developing countries, the first since 1997, when the results of the previous ICP data collection were published in World Development Indicators. The 2005 data cover 146 countries and territories, 29 more than the last round in 1993, and many for the first time.

Durante las últimas décadas en América del Sur se dieron grandes revoluciones  agrarias en varios países, inmensas movilizaciones y revueltas sociales de campesinos e indígenas por la consolidación de sus territorios, avances legales nacionales y regionales importantes. También está clara una tendencia a la urbanización como expresión de “modernidad” y como la búsqueda de acceso a recursos y servicios que no llegan a las comunidades más lejanas. No cabe duda que los avances son mérito de las organizaciones sociales y la institucionalidad que la acompaña.

En este artículo, dice Miguel Urioste, “(…) queremos desarrollar algunas ideas que nos ayuden a entender cómo esta suigéneris metropolización surge a partir de la secular postergación del campesinado, no es fruto del azar, ni del ineluctable destino, ni de la fatalidad.

La agricultura familiar campesina suele verse fundamentalmente como un asunto de producción y, escasamente, de comercio. Sin embargo, se quiera reconocer o no, sus sujetos están insertos de diversa forma en los mercados. Y aquí entran los consumidores como una dimensión imprescindible de considerar. La autora del presente artículo, primer premio en el Concurso Alimentos y pensamientos, siempre en Agenda, 2014,  nos habla del papel de las y los consumidores en la inclusión exitosa de la agricultura familiar en el mercado.
 

 
Este artículo mereció el primer premio en el Concurso “Juventudes Rurales, Situación y Desafíos” del año 2013. Su autor describe y analiza la participación de los jóvenes en la esfera política de las zonas rurales andinas de Bolivia y Perú, vinculando esa vivencia con las lógicas comunitarias tradicionales y las prácticas modernas. Asimismo muestra el apoyo  que brindan los jóvenes a sus ayllus para el desarrollo comunitario.
