In this episode of the LandUP! podcast, we wanted to better understand a largely unexplored subject matter: the land rights of persons with disabilities. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities defines persons with disabilities as including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
Official data reports that 15% of the world's population currently lives with some form of a disability and 82% of Persons with Disabilities live in developing countries with little access to land or property rights. Despite this, thus far, land rights have largely not been engaged with enough through a disability lens. With this in mind, we invite you to consult this new podcast episode. This episode will define and challenge the current language used with regards to persons with disabilities, touch on less known terms dealing with discrimination that can happen for people with disabilities within spheres of environmental activism and hopefully, begin to create a narrative around this important nexus.
