Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which colonized the island in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence, Dominica's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female prime minister in the Caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years. On 18 September 2017, Hurricane Maria passed over the island causing extensive damage to structures, roads, communications, and the power supply, and largely destroying critical agricultural areas.


Government type: parliamentary republic.


The politics of Dominica takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Dominica is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the House of Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

These Rules are made under section 181 of the principal Act, and relate to the procedures to be followed in the application to the Registrar of Titles, under section 133 of the Act, for confirmation of possessory title. The model form is presented in the annexed Schedule.

This Act deals with the administration and disposal of State lands which are defined as all lands other than forest reserves vested in the State, including all lands which have been escheated to the State or may be acquired by the State. A Director of Surveys and Commissioner of Lands shall be appointed to implement this Act. The Act provides for, inter alia, the sale, lease, etc. of State lands; accounting procedures; surveys; penalties for trespass and other offences; legal and administrative matters relating to the purchase of State lands.

Agricultural Small Tenancies Act (Cap. 58:70.

An Act to regulate contracts of tenancy of small agricultural holdings. "Small holding" means any area of land under cultivation or pasture or intended for cultivation or pasturage, with or without buildings thereon, comprising not less that half an acre or more than ten acres in one or more parcels of land of a landlord (sect. 2). No person shall let any small holding unless a contract of tenancy has been entered into between the parties thereto. The contract shall be in writing in the form as prescribed in the First Schedule.
