This Act provides for the allocation of Maldivian land for different purposes and uses, for the issuing of land and state dwellings for residential purposes and for the sale, transfer and lease of Maldivian land.The Ministry of Home Affairs, Housing and Environment will be responsible for maintaining land records of the Maldives.

The purpose of the present Law is to conserve and protect the soil against harmful effects, in particular against erosion, densification of the soil and hazardous substances, and to improve and restore the health of the soil. To reach this aim everyone shall behave in such a way as to reduce damage to the soil to the unavoidable minimum – in particular accumulation of hazardous substances in the soil and deterioration of the soil structure – in view of ensuring an effective soil protection.

This Act aims at the conservation of hill lands, the prevention of soil erosion, and the control of siltation.The Ruler in Council or the Yang di-Pertuan in Council of a State may declare any area to be hill land for the purposes of this Act. Such an area shall be registered and various activities within hill land, including the cultivation of short term crops, are prohibited or restricted.
