In the process of harmonizing the Cypriot legislation with the environmental legislative framework of the European Union, this law sets forth the basic provisions for the protection of water resources and soil against polution. The law aims at protecting surface and underground waters and soil from human and industrial polluting activities and at controlling the disposal of liquid and solid industrial waste.

The purpose of the present Law is to conserve and protect the soil against harmful effects, in particular against erosion, densification of the soil and hazardous substances, and to improve and restore the health of the soil. To reach this aim everyone shall behave in such a way as to reduce damage to the soil to the unavoidable minimum – in particular accumulation of hazardous substances in the soil and deterioration of the soil structure – in view of ensuring an effective soil protection.

The present Law lays down provisions relating to consolidation of land in order to create a functional, environment-friendly and efficient agriculture and forestry. Under the present Law a party to consolidation proceedings is normally entitled to receive land corresponding in value to the land the party owned prior to the consolidation proceedings as compensation in kind. In exceptional cases compensation in kind is partly or fully replaced by compensation in money.

The aim of this Act is to prevent disputes concerning the possession of lands gained by alluvium or dereliction of a river or the sea.If the Collector, appointed by the Government, is credibly informed that a dispute is likely to arise he/she may by an order in writing attach such land, demarcate it with boundary pillars, appoint a receiver to manage it, invite claims to such land, and after examination send the list of claimants to the district judge for determination of title of the claimants.
