Sin pretender que los diferentes nmeros sean como un manual de una materia concreta, se propone presentar una serie de anlisis de cuestiones especficas que contribuyan a suscitar inters y a concienciar al lector.

This forty-page paper is the second of three reports on forest resources in Madagascar. It is compose of five main parts focusing on the review, compilation and analysis of data related the industrial forest plantations sector in the country. The main topics discussed are the actual state of industrial plantations, the analysis of trends, etc. A complete conclusion is provided followed by a series of tables in the annexes.

This issue of Unasylva examines a number of facets of forestry research, emphasizing needs for and efforts made towards strengthening national capability in the developing countries.

Globally, according to FRA 2000, planted forests accounted for only 5% of forest area, but up to 35% of industrial roundwood supply. This is anticipated to rise to 40-44% by 2020. Planted forests reflect a higher social, environmental and economic importance than their area would suggest. Many countries have existing planted forest data that is not based upon forest inventory, is incomplete and often outdated. Thus it is difficult to measure and plan the quantity and quality of planted forest resources and the provision of goods and services that they supply.

Forest loss contributes to one-sixth of annual greenhouse gas emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change. Experience shows that approaches to reducing deforestation and forest degradation and strengthening forest governance – such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) – can be far more effective in countering forest loss if they are jointly implemented. To date, however, few countries have capitalized on the synergies between these processes.
