Esta celebración representa una oportunidad de concentrar la atención mundial en los desafíos a que deben hacer frente tanto los países desarrollados como los países en desarrollo a la hora de abordar el acceso a la energía y los problemas relacionados con el uso eficiente de las fuentes energéticas sostenibles.

AGROECOLOGY is the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable food systems. It focuses on the interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment. Agroecological practices work in harmony with these interactions, applying innovative solutions that harness and conserve biodiversity. Agroecology is practised in all corners of the world, with the traditional and local knowledge of family farmers at its core.

Perhaps the most important socio-economic and political development in Europe between the time of ETTS IV and that of ETTS V was the start of the process of transition for the former centrally planned economies to a market economy system. The changes to every part of these countries' society and institutions are profound and sometimes painful. The forest and forest products sector is no exception.

En diciembre de 1997, la FAO alberg un seminario sobre el pluralismo y el desarrollo forestal y rural sostenible, cuya finalidad era intercambiar informacin y experiencias y encontrar mtodos que permitan optimizar la cooperacin entre distintos grupos interesados en la ordenacin de los recursos forestales. El seminario cont con la presencia de 35 participantes en representacin de organizaciones (y de tipos de organizacin, regiones geogrficas y disciplinas) diferentes. Los artculos de este nmero de Unasylva son adaptaciones de los documentos presentados en ese seminario.

Marine capture fisheries have developed very quickly in the past decade as reflected by the rapid increase in the number of fishing vessels. Total fishing effort has grown from 42,779 vessels in 1975 to 273,978 in 1995 or in terms of horsepower from 2,150,000 kW to 9,801,000 kW. Meanwhile total catch increased from 2,773,000 tonnes to 10,268,000 tonnes during the same period. Due to the continued increase in fishing effort, some important fish stocks (except for some pelagic species and squids) are in serious threat.
