In this issue, we discuss the Global Bioenergy Partnership and the important work it is undertaking - in collaboration with governments and international organizations - to establish sustainability indicators for bioenergy projects. We also report on the Food for the Cities Initiative, an integrative approach to coordinating FAO's activities in urban and peri-urban areas and sharing best practices with other international and civil society organizations. Finally, we introduce the new water report: Climate change, water and food security.

Uno de los primeros productos que desarrolló AQUASTAT, en sus inicios en 1994, fue la metodología para la evaluación de recursos hídricos. Aunque ha sido muy útil, durante los 20 años que AQUASTAT ha usado esta metodología han aparecido algunos fallos y en ocasiones ha resultado ser demasiado complicada. Cada vez era más evidente que había que poner solución a algunos de los principales problemas. En consecuencia, en marzo de 2015 se implementaron algunos cambios en AQUASTAT que se resumen en este artículo. .

En el Marco Estratégico para la FAO 2000-2015 se establecen las cinco principales estrategias institucionales que ha de seguir la Organización. La estrategia D de la FAO, “Conservar y mejorar el uso sostenible de la base de recursos naturales”, se ha desglosado en dos objetivos estratégicos: D1 “Ordenación integrada de la tierra, el agua y los recursos pesqueros, forestales y genéticos” y D2 “Conservación, rehabilitación y desarrollo de los entornos expuestos a mayores riesgos”.

FAO opened the Nigeria Representation Office in 1978, and has since provided unabated support to the country in the formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, programmes and projects in food, agriculture and natural resources. The cooperation aims to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in a broad-based, equitable and sustainable manner. In providing this assistance, FAO has always focused on enhancing the livelihood of smallholders, who form the bulk of the rural poor, in a way that is technically, economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

In this issue, we look at a new publication entitled â¿¿Payments for ecosystem services and food securityâ¿¿. This document was produced as part of preparatory process for FAOâ¿¿s participation in the Rio+20 event to be held in 2012. We also look ahead to World Water Week to be held 21-27 August in Stockholm, Sweden, where FAO will participate in a seminar anticipating the theme of 2012â¿¿s World Water Day â¿¿ Water and Food Security.

The global economic cost of food wastage, based on 2009 producer prices, is 750 billion USD, approximately the 2011 GDP of Turkey or Switzerland. The lost grain in sub-Saharan Africa only could meet the minimum annual food requirement of 48 million people. Lost and wasted food represents a missed opportunity to feed the growing world population. It also comes at a steep environmental price, as land quality, water quantity, biodiversity are adversely affected. Wasted food also has a strong impact on global climate change.

The key influences on forestry in Eritrea are identified in this report which also describes how the country is responding to them with new policy and management schemes.
