This Project Brief provides key findings, lessons and policy implications drawn from the research programme entitled ‘Socio-Economic Analysis and Policy Implications of the Roles of Agriculture in Developing Countries’ (ROA Project) implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations from 2000 to 2006.

This paper presents the results of a follow-up project in Algeria and Tunisia on the development of gender-sensitive indicators related to the role of women in agricultural water management. The paper summarizes the results of the “Phase 1” project, then presents the results of two studies conducted in Algeria and Tunisia on institutional level actors dealing with agricultural water management and national-level sex-disaggregated data.

Land and water investment priorities include coping with worsening land degradation, increasing productivity of the region’s large rainfed areas and modernising wasteful water delivery and irrigation systems.

Tras su conclusión oficial, en octubre de 2011, el proyecto fue entregado a la Iniciativa de la Cuenca del Nilo, una organización intergubernamental creada en 1999 que tiene su sede en Entebbe (Uganda).

This fact sheet explains how water can be used in the city and reused in agriculture in a way that benefits both farmers and city dwellers. Water reuse in agriculture has numerous advantages for all the parties involved as it provides a year round supply of water, together with nutrients and organic matter, to support crop production; providing food, income and employment to cities and improving urban landscape. In addition, well managed water reuse can lessen the pollution load on downstream watercourses.

This publication is a set of practical guidelines and norms for field project engineers for the design and building of small hydraulic structures using earth and gabions. This publication would be useful in designing small earth dams with a gabion spillway, intake weirs for gravity irrigation schemes, groynes, river bed training works and for protection against hydraulic erosion.
