Seasonal changes and ambiguity in property rights over land and natural resources create conflicts in rural communities in eastern Zambia. This study describes how rural households have minimized such conflicts and protect the economic interests of the poor members of the community through collective agreements on how to manage access to land and natural resources. Specifically, this study describes and evaluates the formulation and implementation of bylaws governing the grazing of animals and the setting of bush fires.

This brief considers the current state and practice of dispute resolution mechanisms in Cambodia, which have been formed to address land disputes and conflicts. The first section introduces land rights abuses in the context of economic land concessions and land grabs, and discusses the relevance for studying land dispute resolution mechanisms in Cambodia. The second section describes the five main dispute resolution mechanisms and the jurisdiction of each mechanism depending on the type of land dispute involved.

In the Mekong region, conflicts between local communities and large scale land concessions are widespread. They are often difficult to solve. In Cambodia, an innovative approach to conflict resolution was tested in a case involving a private company, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), and several indigenous communities who lost some of their customary lands and forests when the company obtained a concession to grow rubber in the Province of Ratanakiri. The approach was developed by CSOs Equitable Cambodia (EC) and Inclusive Development International (IDI) with the support of QDF funding from MRLG.
