It will be recalled that, at its 5th meeting held at Rabat, the ECA Conference of ministers decided to include studies and related activities concerning the establishment of agricultural commodity exchange for Eastern and Southern African States in the work programme of the Lusaka MULPOC for 1980-1981. Thereafter, the Lusaka MULPOC Council of Ministers, at its 3rd meeting held at Gaborone, Botswana, formally incorporated that project in its work programme for 1980.

The report contains suggestions for a greater effort to be made in the understanding of the problems of agricultural development from the point of view, of the small, farmers and for a consequent reorientation of actions so that the relevant institutions would be able to serve the interests of the small farmers and the nation at large.

This paper focuses on the deteriorating food situation in Africa which led to the Freetown Declaration of the FAO Regional Conference of Ministers of Agriculture in 1976, the Regional Food Plan (AFPLAN) was drawn up jointly by FAO and ECA and adopted by the FAO Regional Conference of Ministers of Agriculture in Arusha in 1973.

a) ensure better understanding of the importance and potential

for industrial application of sorghums etc. and the technologies

available for milling and baking coarse grains'

b) ascertain the status and plans of existing 'national composite

flour programmes or the possibilities of establishing such

Het gebied "Zundert" is in agrarisch opzicht een uniek en dynamisch gebied. Vele bedrijfstypen komen naast elkaar voor. Hierbij neemt de boomteelt een centrale plaats in. De laatste jaren heeft deze bedrijfstak, mede door de goede bedrijfsresultaten, zich sterk uitgebreid: bijna een verdubbeling van het areaal en de produktie in vijf jaar tijds. Het totaal aantal bedrijven in Zundert liep de laatste jaren maar weinig terug. Ook het aantal arbeidskrachten is nauwelijks afgenomen. De land- en tuinbouw is een belangrijke bron van werkgelegenheid en zal dit in de toekomst zeker blijven.

De rol die voorlichting kan spelen bij het landinrichtingsbeleid, wordt in sterke mate beinvloed door het feit dat het belang dat dit beleid tracht te dienen gewoonlijk slechts ten dele overeenstemt met hetgeen de betrokkenen als hun belang zien. Ook het belang van de boeren, de natuurbeschermers, de recreanten en de belastingbetalers is lang niet altijd met elkaar in overeenstemming. Het is een politieke beslissing welk gewicht aan elk van deze belangen wordt toegekend.
