The Gender Equality Initiative (HER+) conducts innovative gender and social science research to develop actionable solutions to enhance climate resilience and empowerment of women in Africa and Asia. As one-size-fits-all solutions do not exist, HER+ identifies and develops diverse scenarios for co-creation of bundling socio-technical innovations. The grass species Urochloa humidicola adapts to different environmental conditions, primarily waterlogging. Accession CIAT679 stands out for its adaptation to acidic soils of low fertility and easy propagation, while hybrid Uh08 1149 excels in agronomic characteristics and high capacity of Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI). This study aimed to evaluate physiological characteristics of these two U. humidicola genotypes in three contrasting growth conditions: hydroponic system, low-fertility soil, and high-fertility soil.

The Local Climate Advisory Committees (LTACs) are spaces for inclusive dialogue between a diversity of local stakeholders such as farmers, extension services, representatives of the public, private and scientific sectors that seek to understand the possible behavior of the climate in a locality and generate recommendations to reduce the risks associated with expected climate variability.

As part of the AICCRA project, the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted land Use (WASCAL) and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) are tasked to to develop curricula and training materials to accelerate the mainstreaming Climate Information Services (CIS) and Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) into University’s curricula in Africa.

The slow, limited, and uneven progress on women’s empowerment and gender equality over the last decade clearly shows that rural transformation, with its focus on efficiency and productivity, is leaving women behind in addition to having negative impacts on the environment and nutrition. New inclusive models of rural transformation are called for. The study argues that treating gender equality and women’s empowerment as key in the process of rural transformation will lead to a more inclusive and resilient transformation of rural spaces.

Gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in many agri-food systems (AFS), limiting the potential of women—especially those from agriculture-dependent communities—to be empowered and to build social and economic resilience to climate change challenges. The Harnessing Gender and Social Equality for Resilience in Agri-food Systems (HER+) initiative will generate learning and evidence on where and how to intervene at a deeper level to disrupt the foundations of inequality in AFS. This effort requires high-quality data.

Prominent climate change events such as heavy rainfall, windstorms, heatwaves, and drought pose detrimental effects on the livelihoods and resilience of women and men actors in agri-food systems (AFS). This study explored the difference in coping mechanisms employed by women and men cassava smallholder farmers in the face of such climate change adversities.

The Socio-Technical Innovation Bundles (STIBs) framework, developed by the CGIAR's Initiative on Gender Equality, in collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), offers a systematic approach to enhance women's empowerment and resilience in the agrifood system by addressing gender-specific barriers and challenges, combining technological and social innovations in a demand-driven and context-specific manner.

Dans la région des grands lacs africains, et plus particulièrement dans les milieux ruraux de la RDC et du Rwanda, le secteur agricole joue un rôle prédominant dans l’économie locale et constitue le principal moyen de subsistance des ménages. Ce dernier, évalué en termes de capital financier, humain, matériel, naturel et du capital social favorise le développement agricole des ménages. Malheureusement, dans les zones rurales de la RDC et du Rwanda, mobiliser ces différentes formes de capital pour le bien-être des ménages demeure un défi important à relever.

Prior to the 1980s, information on agricultural incentives provided by governments was extremely limited and difficult to access. Much debate took place on the basis of participants’ preferred alternative facts. During the 1980s, the OECD began to collect detailed information on agricultural incentives in member countries, but data remained fragmentary for developing countries. The only close-to-global information on agricultural distortions was provided by a one-off study undertaken by Kym Anderson at the World Bank, completed in 2009.

This article explores deforestation and reforestation dynamics over 415,749 hectares of 25 titled Indigenous Community Lands (ICLs) in the Peruvian Amazon over forty years at three scales: total area, regions, and communities. We focus on ICLs as the territorial unit of analysis, as they are increasingly discussed regarding their importance for conservation. Additionally indigenous communities (ICs) are a too-marginalized group in the Amazon that merit more attention. Analyses of this kind are often short-term and use only large-scale Earth Observation methodologies.
