The Land Resources Planning (LRP) is a free accessible online “global knowledge hub” for a range of stakeholders and provides technical information on tools and approaches to assist decision makers at different levels to tackle obstacles at policy level and to facilitate the implementation of viable solutions on the ground.

Soil loss is a major threat to the agricultural development in Malawi and by extension is also a major hindrance to the overall economic development of the country since the Malawian economy is dependent on agriculture. Not only does soil loss reduce the cultivable soil depth but it also takes away the fertile soils from the farmlands. The net effect is loss of agricultural productivity, increased expenditure on fertilizers, and a general decline in profitability of crop production.

The Proceedings of the Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon 2017 (GSOC17) presents the abstracts of all scientific presentations held during the GSOC17. 103 oral presentations and 35 poster presentations built the core of this event triggering fruitful discussions on the state-of-science in measuring, preserving and enhancing soil organic carbon in different soils of the world.

This document presents the main outcomes of the Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon (GSOC17) held at FAO headquarters (Rome, 21-23 March 2017). It presents key messages intensively discussed and developed by the GSOC17 participants and subsequently reviewed and synthesized by the Scientific Committee. The GSOC17 Outcome Document highlights major issues and future directions regarding Soil Organic Carbon preservation and enhancement in research, practice and policy.

Land is consistently ranked among the sectors where people most often report having to pay bribes to access services, according to Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer. The Land Portal has summarised the latest available (dated 2013) global data here, which shows that the incidence of bribes paid for land services can be over 50% in countries such as Cambodia, India and Pakistan.

Conservation agriculture (CA) is widely promoted as a sustainable agricultural management strategy with the potential to alleviate some of the adverse effects of modern, industrial agriculture such as large-scale soil erosion, nutrient leaching and overexploitation of water resources. Moreover, agricultural land managed under CA is proposed to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation through reduced emission of greenhouse gases, increased solar radiation reflection, and the sustainable use of soil and water resources.

Report, prepared by FAO and the OECD with inputs from IFPRI, IFAD, the World Bank and WTO, submitted to the G20 Presidency of the Republic of Argentina in response to the Presidency’s request for information on future trends and challenges faced by global agriculture, with a special focus on the role of soils in promoting food security and the measures that could be undertaken to facilitate sustainable soil management.

This case study explores the different barriers that men and women face when implementing sustainable land management (SLM) under the Nairobi Water Fund (NWF) in Kenya. The NWF is a public-private partnership, designed by The Nature
Conservancy (TNC) as a payment for ecosystem services (PES) scheme, under which farmers in the Upper Tana River basin receive in-kind payments for implementing sustainable land management practices. They include constructing water pans
