Soil loss assessment in Malawi

Soil loss is a major threat to the agricultural development in Malawi and by extension is also a major hindrance to the overall economic development of the country since the Malawian economy is dependent on agriculture. Not only does soil loss reduce the cultivable soil depth but it also takes away the fertile soils from the farmlands. The net effect is loss of agricultural productivity, increased expenditure on fertilizers, and a general decline in profitability of crop production.

Land is consistently ranked among the sectors where people most often report having to pay bribes to access services, according to Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer. The Land Portal has summarised the latest available (dated 2013) global data here, which shows that the incidence of bribes paid for land services can be over 50% in countries such as Cambodia, India and Pakistan.

Conservation agriculture (CA) is widely promoted as a sustainable agricultural management strategy with the potential to alleviate some of the adverse effects of modern, industrial agriculture such as large-scale soil erosion, nutrient leaching and overexploitation of water resources. Moreover, agricultural land managed under CA is proposed to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation through reduced emission of greenhouse gases, increased solar radiation reflection, and the sustainable use of soil and water resources.
