Distribution and ecology of wild lettuces Lactuca serriola L. and Lactuca virosa L. in central Chile

Décembre, 2020
Chile

Wild lettuces (Lactuca L.) may provide valuable genetic resources for crop breeding, but are also significant invasive weeds. Monitoring populations of these species is important, therefore, both to inform genetic resource conservation efforts as well as for non-native plant species control. We explored the occurrences, distributions, and characteristics of populations of wild Lactuca species in central Chile through field surveys in 2016 and 2017, significantly adding to the available information on these species in the region.

On-farm assessment of cassava root yield response to tillage, plant density, weed control and fertilizer application in southwestern Nigeria

Décembre, 2020
Nigeria

Cassava is growing in importance in Nigeria as a food and industrial crop. Current yields are low due to poor soil fertility and because farmers do not use improved germplasm, clean planting material, or improved crop management in Nigeria. To provide feasible agronomic recommendations targeting increased root yield, the effects of tillage intensity, fertilizer application, plant density and weed control were tested in 230 farmers’ fields in southwestern Nigeria over two years.

Collection, genotyping and virus elimination of cassava landraces from Tanzania and documentation of farmer knowledge

Décembre, 2020
Global

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) has been a vital staple and food security crop in Tanzania for several centuries, and it is likely that its resilience will play a key role in mitigating livelihood insecurities arising from climate change. The sector is dominated by smallholder farmers growing traditional landrace varieties. A recent surge in virus diseases and awareness in the commercial potential of cassava has prompted a drive to disseminate improved varieties in the country. These factors however also threaten the existence of landraces and associated farmer knowledge.
