Land is a natural resource that is valued for many reasons. Farmers utilize land to earn their livelihood and as a store of wealth for future retirement. Rural residents have increasingly sought open space for home sites and pursuit of a lifestyle. Developers seek financial opportunities to invest in and develop land for non-farm uses. For some, land is viewed as an investment and a hedge against inflation. This myriad of demands for land combined with its fixed supply continually alters its market price.

With a fast growing population requiring an ever growing supply of food, a national poverty rate of 63 percent, and a labor force that is dominated by agricultural work, Nigeria's efforts to boost agricultural productivity could not be better timed. Though women constitute a large share of the agricultural labor force in Nigeria, little is known about their activities, roles, and constraints in the sector.

The NAP 2013 aims at addressing challenges that continue to hinder the development of the agricultural sector; these include low productivity; over dependence on rain-fed agriculture; inadequate agriculture support services; poor infrastructure; weak agro-industries; low quality of agricultural produce; inadequate participation of the country’s private sector in agriculture; environmental degradation and crop pests and diseases.

This study uses five rounds of household panel data from Tigray, Ethiopia, collected in the period 1998–2010 to assess the impacts of a land registration and certification program that aimed to strengthen tenure security and how it has contributed to increased food availability and, thus, food security in this food-deficit region.

This paper starts by reflecting on the concept and measurement of women’s empowerment and then reviews some of the structural interventions that aim to influence underlying gender norms in society and eradicate gender discrimination. It then proceeds to review the evidence of the impact of three types of interventions—cash transfer programs, agricultural interventions, and microfinance programs—on women’s empowerment, nutrition, or both.

The vitally important provision of food through the food system is not a simple linear process, but a contested outcome of a complex system. This systematic literature review was undertaken to better understand the inherent complexity of this system and inform a long‐ term scenario‐planning process aimed at ensuring a food secure future in South Africa.  

O presente Relatório descreve a forma como o projecto Pro-Terras Comunitárias foi implementado. Em particular, o projecto descreve as causas da realização desta pesquisa, a metodologia usada, analisa os dados obtidos e produz recomendações sobre como melhor proteger os direitos das comunidades e dos grupos vulneráveis. Este projecto foi implementado em 20 comunidades dos distritos de Jangamo, Homoine e Morrumbene, localizados na província de Inhambane e teve a duração de 18 meses.

El presente trabajo busca hacer una lectura estructural de algunas de las dinámicas agrarias y rurales de las últimas décadas en Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador y Nicaragua. Se busca mostrar varias dimensiones que interactúan en el medio rural, como son la estructura agraria, el uso del suelo, el incremento de la superficie en fincas gracias a la ampliación de la frontera agrícola, y la evolución de la población tanto nacional como sobre todo en el ambiente rural.

Senegal is implementing a Disaster Risk Management (DRM) framework and has established a public private agriculture insurance company. Rules, responsibilities and operational procedures need clarification, ideally guided by the findings of a fiscal disaster risk assessment. Insurance mechanisms are not considered in (sovereign) catastrophe risk transfer so far.
