The report gives a summary of a policy workshop that was held in December 2019 to discuss the complex issues related to access to and use of genetic resources for climate change adaptation. In particular, the workshop focussed on policies to support the further use in research and breeding, or possible ‘direct use in cultivation’ of materials that performed well in participatory trials supported by these projects.

In many African countries south of the Sahara, farmers depend on the cultivation of vegetatively propagated crops (VPCs) for both consumption and commercial purposes. Yet yields for these crops remain at low levels due, in part, to seed market imperfections that constrain farmers' access to improved varieties and high-quality planting material.

In a country of about 200 million people, the government has over the years constituted various initiatives to address the issue of unemployment, food security, and youth involvement in agriculture. However, the impact of these initiatives has been minimal due to the inconsistency in government policies, changes in government, inadequate implementation mechanism amongst others. This study, therefore, evaluated the impact of the N-power Agro Program on youth employment and income generation through agribusiness in Nigeria.

The cassava system in Nigeria is developing, with increasing attention to its potential positive outcomes. However, credit access is a major problem in expanding productive activities of the different actors across the value chains of cassava products. This study investigates the extent of access to credit by cassava actors with respect to the different financial institutions in the country using data obtained from a sample of 168 actors, including producers, processors, marketers, fabricators and end users.

Resolution of the Ministries of Uzbekistan #504 of 24 August 2020 ”Measures on restoration of local varieties of crops with unique traits and development of their foundation seed supply system”.

A collaborative effort by WLE/Alliance, GIZ-Ethiopia and partners to institutionalize data sharing has led the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture to adopt the concept. Partners undertook many activities: creation of a digital web portal, data collation, standardization guidelines and big data analysis. They are now developing a site-specific fertilizer recommendation tool. This has led to better-targeted recommendations and a paradigm shift in the research and development discourse as well as further funding and scaling of the framework to other countries.

WLE/IWMI’s analysis of 15 business models for fecal sludge management, including its treatment for energy or nutrient recovery in agriculture, was used by the Indian Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Institute to develop capacity building modules. In 2021 and 2022, in collaboration with sector ministries across India, these will be used to train 2,860 government officials, 500 NGO professionals, 60 entrepreneurs, 1,200 sanitation workers, 320 treatment plant operators, and 240 graduates and postgraduates working in the WASH sector.

The Ethiopian Government has initiated a process of water policy reform. WLE/IWMI was approached by the Ministries of Agriculture and of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity to contribute to the review. Drawing from its research, WLE/IWMI brought new ideas to the policy reform table. These ideas include the concept of multiple water values; payment for ecosystem services; irrigation cost recovery, and irrigation performance benchmarking. These options have been incorporated in the draft policy document and will strengthen climate change adaptation.

In 2018, CCAFS and partners provided technical and policy recommendations on Land Productivity and Agricultural Performance for the Colombian Green Growth Policy. The government allocated US $74.5 million to implement actions that help to improve the agricultural sector's performance aiming for increasing by 3%, the agricultural production under green-growth criteria. The current National Development Plan focuses on sustainable agricultural activities that include climate-smart innovation options in line with green growth standards.

Drawing insight from work in Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya and Niger to scale land restoration across the drylands in Africa, the brief defines and describes the Nested Communities of Practice (CoPs) approach and how this project implemented these with key stakeholders (farmers, community facilitators, NGOs, government and researchers) to foster co-learning and sharing with evidence in East Africa and the Sahel.

Domestication of indigenous Son tra or H’mong apple fruits has resulted in higher yields of superior, more marketable fruits while helping in soil conservation efforts in the North-West region of Vietnam. FTA supported partnerships, helped develop and scale adoption of superior son tra genotypes by smallholder farmers and government-led land restoration initiatives.

Increasing demands for energy to boost the Mekong economies have attracted the keen interest of riparian countries for hydropower development. This is evidenced by extensive investment in hydropower projects across the region over the last few decades.
