The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

The provisions of this Act deal with various matters relating to crown lands, such as sale, leases, control over land settlement, jouissances, curatelle lands and exchange of crown lands.Section 4 provides that no land shall be granted or leased otherwise than at its full rental value with an exception of the grant or lease for charitable purposes. All sales of land shall be by public auction (sect. 5). Section 7 contains rules for sale or lease by auction. Control and supervision over land settlement shall be vested in the Chief Agricultural Officer (sect. 15B).
Land Acquisition Act (Act RL 3/341 of 18 December 1973).
The Act provides for the compulsory acquisition of land and the compensation of losses resulting from such acquisition. Section 5 provides for the acquisition of private land by persons requiring such and not having been able to acquire the land by private agreement. In accordance with section 6, the Minister may issue an investigation notice in respect of land likely to be compulsorily acquired. Section 8 provides for notices of compulsory acquisition to be published in the Gazette and two daily newspapers.
Order No. 767/96 approving technical rules to be followed in the planning of coastal areas.
In compliance with Decree-Law 218/94 of 20 August, this Order establishes technical rules to be followed in order to carry out planning of coastal areas. This Ministerial Decree deals with the morphological aspects of coastal areas, specifying the aspects to be examined in the planning process.
Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 168/96 approving the project for land subdivision in the Benquerença area.
This Resolution delimits the agricultural land in the Benquerença region. It lays down the geographical co-ordinates of these lands, specifying the purposes of such delimitation. A map of the area is annexed to the text.
