Reforestation and slope-position effects on nitrogen, phosphorus pools, and carbon stability of various soil aggregates in a red soil hilly land of subtropical China

The impact of slope position on forest restoration processes may dominate the interaction among topsoil aggregates, nutrients, and organic carbon (C) stability following reforestation on degraded hilly land. Six paired plots of shrubland and Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) plantation reforested on shrubland were selected at different positions along a 25° slope in subtropical China. Soil and ecosystem nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and organic C stocks were quantified using a combination of excavation, harvest, and modeling methods.

Forest forecasting with vegetation models across Russia1

Vegetation models are essential tools for projecting large-scale land-cover response to changing climate, which is expected to alter the distribution of biomes and individual species. A large-scale bioclimatic envelope model (RuBCliM) and an individual species based gap model (UVAFME) are used to simulate the Russian forests under current and future climate for two greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Results for current conditions are compared between models and assessed against two independent maps of Russian forest biomes and dominant tree species.

Assessing the influence of forest ownership type and location on roundwood utilization at the stump and top in a region with small-diameter markets

Research conducted in a variety of hardwood regions across the United States has indicated that utilization of small-diameter roundwood is hindered by a lack of markets. Efficient removal of such material could enable silvicultural practices to improve stand conditions and economic return for landowners. However, evidence from other studies has suggested that markets alone may not be enough to encourage small-diameter utilization, and that management decisions are important as well.

Projected US timber and primary forest product market impacts of climate change mitigation through timber set-asides

Whereas climate change mitigation involving payments to forest landowners for accumulating carbon on their land may increase carbon stored in forests, it will also affect timber supply and prices. This study estimated the effect on US timber and primary forest product markets of hypothetical timber set-aside scenarios where US forest landowners would be paid to forego timber harvests for 100 years to increase carbon storage on US timberland.

Spatial variability of evapotranspiration of old-growth cypress forest using remote sensing — a case study of Chilan Mountain cypress forest in Taiwan

The Chilan Mountain cypress forest, northeastern Taiwan, is the only one where the genus Chamaecyparis is situated in a subtropical region. The health of a forest ecosystem is closely tied to the evapotranspiration (ET) of water through forests. This study focused on estimating the ET of old-growth cypress in the Chilan Mountain area and investigated its spatial variability in different watershed divisions using remote sensing.
