Mission and Vision

A just world, without poverty. That is our mission. We believe that people can build independent livelihoods, provided their rights are respected. That is why we help people around the world to stand up for their rights.

1. Right to sustainable livelihood resources

Everybody must be sure of a fair income and enough to eat. Yet this is not the case for 20% of the world’s population. That is why we are working on better access to land and water, and on fair working and trading conditions.

2. Right to basic social services

Education and health care are essential for building better societies. Yet even as we make progress towards universal primary education, around the world, there are still 130 million kids in school who fail to learn basic reading, writing and maths. When governments fail to deliver, Oxfam together with partner organizations invest in quality basic social services.

3. Right to life and security

Natural disasters, climate change and armed conflicts hit millions of people every year. We support them with relief aid and reconstruction. And we prepare people to prevent or mitigate the effects of disasters and conflicts.

4. Right to social and political participation

Knowledge is power. We believe that when people can participate in public decisions that affect them, they can build independent livelihoods and thriving communities.Together with partners we give people access to information and a voice.

5. Right to an identity

Gender inequality is both a violation of human rights and an obstacle to sustainable development. In a just world there is no place for the discrimination of women and minorities.

Our Core Values

When people’s basic rights are respected, we can rid the world of poverty and injustice. This is what we stand for:

  • Empowerment

We work on the basis of the power and potential of people. We provide practical and innovative solutions to empower people to build their livelihoods without poverty.

  • Accountability

We call on those in power to consider people in a vulnerable position in word and action.  And we of course account for our own work to governments, donors, supporters, volunteers, corporations and almost 17 million Dutch men and women.

  • Inclusiveness

We are all equal, irrespective of the accident of birth, gender, faith or sexual orientation. In all our work we give special attention to the position and rights of women and minorities. And given the potentially pivotal role of women as agents of change, gender justice is at the heart of everything we do.

Reports & Research
Juillet, 2020
Global

The webinar Multifaceted Challenges of Land and Climate Change explored the interconnection of land rights and climate responses at micro, meso and macro level. The webinar aimed to explore the following question: What kind of land governance will foster adequate climate response actions? Oxfam and partners in many countries are confronted with this two-sided problem while dealing with both land and climate justice interventions. Oxfam is currently investing in deepening the analysis of land & climate nexus at both country and global level.

Women’s Rights to Land

General

This project aims to address the gender-specific barriers for women, including young women, working in agriculture and in the informal economy of the shea and cocoa sectors in the Upper West, Upper East, Northern and Western Regions of Ghana. The project works to increase women’s agency and leadership to become economically empowered through multiple entry points. The project also aims to bring together many stakeholders working collaboratively and relying on their strengths and areas of influence, to shift gender-related attitudes and behaviours across the agricultural sector. Project activities include: (1) increasing the ability of women and young women to individually and collectively overcome legal and social barriers; (2) improving capacity for household members to recognize, reduce and redistribute unpaid work; (3) increasing access to innovative and viable gender-responsive business models; and (4) enhancing equal access to productive resources for women, including gender-responsive financial products and land ownership and use. The project aims to directly benefit more than 5 400 women (between the ages of 18 and 60) by providing technical and financial support to empower them economically. 955 women will participate in dialogue spaces with traditional and religious leaders. 900 women will receive gender-responsive skills development training, and 540 (50%) of them will receive direct technical and financial assistance for the development of alternative livelihoods opportunities.

CO-Fostering women#s leadership project

General

ITo contribute to improved women#s rights and gender equality in Uganda, Oxfam has been working on women#s rights in Uganda for over 40 years. Together with our partners, we have significantly contributed to the development of gender responsive legislation, i.e. the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (DVA), the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act (FGM) and the Anti-Trafficking of Persons Act. This has been achieved through different avenues such as our convening and research roles, where we have helped to build a movement of civil society organisations and actors on women#s rights through partnership with UWONET. Our research on inequality, un-paid care work and women#s land rights continue to shape the policy agenda on women#s rights in Uganda. In the proposed project we aim to further these initial gains to achieve 2 main outcomes: 1) The Maputo Protocol and other regional declarations on women#s rights are increasingly applied by national government and traditional justice mechanisms 2) Women#s political leadership in northern Uganda is fostered to address women#s land rights and violence against women and girls Working with a local partner UWONET, these outcomes will be achieved by, on the one hand, supporting women leaders to influence policy makers on women#s rights issues using theskills and knowledge generated, and on the other, by continued dialogue with religious and cultural leaders, the justice system, local community members and other key actors on women#s land rights and violence against women and girls. Oxfam will provide the technical guidance and support to the partner UWONET in enhancing women#s leadership through application of the Maputo protocol. Our Women#s rights Advisor will continue to position this project in the strategic plan of both the partner and Oxfam. We will provide strategic linkages between the project and the available platforms on women#s rights in Uganda to shape the agenda on women#s leadershipin Uganda Through our Programme Quality and Learning Department, Oxfam will support oversight functions like developing M<(>&<)>E tools for the project, monitoring, reviews and learning functions. The partner M<(>&<)>E Coordinator will be in charge of ensuring compliance in regard to the use of the tools, data management and reporting. Oxfam will build capacity of UWONET, districts and community structures in understanding and tracking indicators, using tools and reporting. This will be done routinely through onsite support and quarterly technical support visits in project areas. Platforms such as meetings and trainings will be created to promote the M<(>&<)>E function of the project.
