Em 2021, o Gabão tornou-se o primeiro país africano a ser compensado financeiramente por sua capacidade de reduzir as emissões de CO2 do desmatamento e da degradação florestal sob o mecanismo REDD+. O país recebeu um pagamento de US$17 milhões da Noruega, de um total de US$150 milhões.
