En este número del Boletín del Departamento de Gestión de RecursosNaturales y Medio Ambiente nos complace anunciar que las Naciones Unidas han declarado el año 2012 Año Internacional de la Energía Sostenible para Todos. Esta celebración representa una oportunidad de concentrar la atención mundial en los desafíos a que deben hacer frente tanto los países desarrollados como los países en desarrollo a la hora de abordar el acceso a la energía y los problemas relacionados con el uso eficiente de las fuentes energéticas sostenibles.

The Agricultural Water Solutions Project aims to unlock the potential of smallholder farming by identifying, evaluating and recommending a variety of agricultural water management (AWM) solutions - including technologies as well as the necessary supporting policies, institutions, financing arrangements and associated business models. This is being achieved through a series of interlinked activities in the seven project sites in Africa (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia) and in India (Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal).

AGROECOLOGY is the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable food systems. It focuses on the interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment. Agroecological practices work in harmony with these interactions, applying innovative solutions that harness and conserve biodiversity. Agroecology is practised in all corners of the world, with the traditional and local knowledge of family farmers at its core.

Since 1999, the Federal Government of Nigeria has been seriously pursuing the quest for serlf-sufficiency in food production. This commitment to the development of the nations potentials in agriculture resulted in the formulation and implementation, in conjunction with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, of the USD 45.2 million National Special Programme for Food Security (NSPFS). Under its Food Security sub-project, the government is promoting rapid investment in agriculture within 109 sites in all 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) i.e.

The Land and Water Days are jointly convened by FAO, IFAD and WFP as part of efforts aimed at reaching effective and lasting impacts for land and water actions on the ground.

Les insignes des Nations Unies ont été élaborés en collaboration avec les agences des Nations Unies, la société civile et d’autres organismes. Ils visent à sensibiliser, éduquer et motiver les jeunes à changer leurs comportements pour devenir des agents actifs du changement dans leurs communautés locales. Les insignes peuvent être utilisés par les professeurs pendant leurs classes et par les responsables de groupes de jeunes, surtout Guides et Scouts.

The present document is a follow-up to previous FAO technical assistance efforts in the sustainable development and management of the fishery and aquaculture sector in Georgia. It aims to call attention to and provide evidences of the fact that fisheries and aquaculture have substantial development potentials in Georgia. The country is rich in both marine and inland water resources, but the potentials of the fishery and aquaculture sector are far from being exploited.

The Emergency Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (EIRP)-UTF/AFG/035/AFG started in April 2004 and concluded in December 2011. The project was funded by the World Bank (WB) through one credit and three grants provided to the Government of Afghanistan (GoA) for implementation through the Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW). The project is supported with technical assistance (TA) provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN).

This paper describes FAOs programme in water. FAO’s water activities can be classified in three main categories: a) Information and knowledge, b) Policy advice; c) Technical support to countries and their constituents.
