Mongolia es un gran país sin salida al mar, de 157 millones de hectáreas, que limita con Rusia al norte y con China por los demás lados. Está situado en altas mesetas con una altitud media de 1.580 m sobre el nivel del mar, estando más del 80% del país por encima de los 1.000 m. Mientras que gran parte del paisaje de la parte meridional del país se caracteriza por desiertos rocosos, sobre todo el desierto de Gobi, y estepas herbáceas semiáridas, con pocos bosques, también hay importantes cadenas montañosas en las partes occidental, central y septentrional del país. Las zonas ecológicas incluyen zonas montañosas alpinas, taiga, estepa forestal, estepa desértica y desierto. Con poco más de 3,2 millones de habitantes en 2019, Mongolia es el país menos densamente poblado del mundo. Sin embargo, hay muchos desafíos medioambientales relacionados con la desertificación, el sobrepastoreo de los pastizales y los impactos del cambio climático.
