These Regulations aim at the prevention of pollution of groundwater by substances listed in the Schedule and to control or eliminate as far as possible consequences of existing pollution. Regulation 3 excludes certain effluents and discharges from the application sphere of the Regulations. Regulation 6 concerns authorization of artificial recharges of groundwater.

The principal Regulations prohibit the use of lead shot for shooting with a shot gun: (a) on or over any area below the high-water mark; (b) on or over the sites of special scientific interest included in Schedule 1 to the principal Regulations; (c) any wild bird included in Schedule 2 to the principal Regulations. Regulation 2(2) of these Regulations substitutes a new Schedule 1 to the principal Regulations, providing a revised list of sites of special scientific interest to which the prohibition on the use of lead shot applies.

These Regulations prohibit the use of lead shot for shooting with a shotgun: (a) on or over any area below the high-water mark; (b) on or over the sites of special scientific interest included in Schedule 1 to the Regulations; or (c) any wild bird included in Schedule 2 to the Regulations namely ducks and geese (all species of each), coot and moorhen (regulation 3). "Lead shot" means any shot made of lead or of any alloy or compound of lead where lead comprises more than 1 percent of that alloy or compound (reg. 2).

Part II of this Order makes provision for implementing Council Directive 96/61/EC and for otherwise preventing and controlling pollution. It amends the transitional provisions in relation to waste management licenses in Article 47 of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 and makes provision about certain expiring disposal licenses. Part III makes provision for implementing Council Directive 96/62 EC and for otherwise preventing and controlling air pollution. Part IV makes new provision with respect to areas of special scientific interest.

These Regulations provide rules for the use of deposit of waste for the filling up of land sites. These Regulations provide additional measures procedures and guidance to rules contained in the Waste Management (Permit and Control) Regulations, 2002, to prevent and reduce as far as possible negative effects on the environment in particular the pollution of surface water, groundwater, and soil from landfilling of waste. Regulation 4 classifies landfills. Regulation 9 concerns the application for a landfill operating permit.

These Regulations provide additional measures procedures and guidance to rules contained in the Waste Management (Permit and Control) Regulations, 2002, on the controlled disposal of Polycholorinated Biphenyls and Polycholorinated Terphenyls, the decontamination or disposal of equipment containing such substances, or the disposal of used substances in order to eliminate them completely.

This Instrument establishes the Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (Grants) Scheme for 2003. It enables the payment of grants to applicants who satisfy certain conditions. Applications for grants shall be considered if the agricultural business of the applicant is situated in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone or if the expenditure proposed is, in the opinion of the Scottish Ministers, likely to lead to an increase in the production capacity of the business.

The Act also aims to ensure that everyone has the right to participate in the preparation process, and that planning is high quality and interactive, that expertise is comprehensive and that there is open provision of information on matters being processed.
