Land registries play a key role in protecting landholders against dispossession and promoting good governance and economic development. Effective land agencies provide efficient and accessible land registration services, transparent land information, and clear ownership records to prevent disputes. Accurate records of property rights provide a basis for delivering services such as water or electricity, levying property taxes, enforcing zoning and environmental laws, and are necessary (although not sufficient) for landholders to use their properties as collateral.

Despite a history of more than 100 years and the introduction of provisional maps to support land registration, the Kenyan cadastre is largely incomplete. It consists of a patchwork of maps of different positional qualities, which would not be readily integrated to create a nation-wide coverage. This paper outlines the structure of the Kenyan cadastre and analyses the quality of the cadastral maps with regard to the requirements of modern land administration.

Around US$250 million of non-military aid enters the country, but only 15-20 percent of this amount is spent locally through local procurement or staff expenditure. Solomon Islands are currently highly reliant on logging for export receipts, Government revenues, and employment. But existing stocks of natural forest logs are expected to be entirely exhausted by 2014.
