Ecologies of Scale: Multifunctionality Connects Conservation and Agriculture across Fields, Farms, and Landscapes

Peer-reviewed publication
Septembre, 2014

Agroecology and landscape ecology are two land-use sciences based on ecological principles, but have historically focused on fine and broad spatial scales, respectively. As global demand for food strains current resources and threatens biodiversity conservation, concepts such as multifunctional landscapes and ecologically-analogous agroecosystems integrate ecological concepts across multiple spatial scales.

Land laws amendment bills: a practitioner’s perspective on the land bills

Kenya

The first set of the land laws were enacted in 2012 in line with the timelines outlined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010. In keeping with the spirit of the constitution, the Land Act, Land Registration Act and the national Land Commission Act respond to the requirements of Articles 60, 61, 62, 67 & 68 of the Constitution. The National Land Policy, which was passed as Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2009, arrived earlier than the Constitution, with some radical proposals on the land Management.

Japan

Vast and beautiful grassland landscapes in the Aso Kuju National Park have been maintained by human activities e.g. controlled burning, pasturage and mowing. However, the aging of local farmers and the stagnation of livestock industry make such grassland management increasingly difficult. A successful landscape management of extensive grasslands and forests requires a consensus between grassland restoration and timber forest operation, because locals' opinions vary.

Evaluation of splitting characteristics of magnesium improved soil by image analysis

Journal Articles & Books
Mars, 2014

This paper shows that rice husk ash (RHA) changes the mechanical property of magnesium improved soil. Splitting test was conducted on two types of soil (normal and mixed with RHA). Fracture process was qualitatively evaluated by image analysis and acoustic emission (AE). Thus, concentration of vertical stain and AE in spitting fracture appears different characteristics. By evaluating the mechanical properties from image analysis and AE parameters, the characteristic of improved soil is qualitatively evaluated.

Determination of valuable agricultural land in the frame of preparation of countywide spatial plans: Estonian experiences and challenges

Décembre, 2013
Estonia

The protection of agricultural land is an important issue because the area of food production per capita will be decreasing by several estimations in the next decades. The planning measures to ensure the preservation of valuable arable land are among the objectives of county plans in Estonia. However, there is no clear methodology for determination of valuable agricultural land as of now. The aim of the study was to develop methodology in order to determine valuable agricultural lands in the frame of preparation of countywide spatial plans in Estonia.

MELIORATION OF SOILS IN FOREST NURSERY WITH THE USE OF NON-TRADITIONAL ORGANIC FERTILIZERS

Journal Articles & Books
Décembre, 2013
Norvège

It is important to reclam degraded soils in forest nurseries to get quality planting material. Organic wastes and fertilizers on their base may be used for it. The aim of the research is to evaluate the effectiveness of influence of non-traditional fertilizers on the basis of organic waste on fertility of sod-podzolic soils, growth of seedlings and saplings of trees in forest nurseries. In the course of the research such problems as influence of non-conventional fertilizers on properties of sod-podzolic soils were studied.

Integrated method of dark chestnut soil reclamation upon rice growing

Fédération de Russie

The integrated method of dark-chestnut soil reclamation comprising green manure and application of different doses of phosphogipsum and mineral fertilizers (MF) calculated for planned yield was used in 2009. Influence of this actions on physical, chemical, agrochemical properties of soils upon rice growing, as well as on the yield of rice and winter wheat have been estimated during three following years. The variant "green manure +10 t/ha (double dose) of phosphogipsum + deep subsoiling + MF" had the best impact on soil processes.

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there were presented the efficiency of connected applications on drained soils Lakeland area of the main melioration activities to drain the excess water on the surface and arable soil layer, increasing runoff, creating additional reserves of available moisture in the subsurface layer, and others aimed at improving the productivity of reclaimed land.

Utilization of organic fertilizers and chemical fertilizers on asparagus (Asparagus officinalis Linn.) quality, yield and soil chemical properties

Conference Papers & Reports
Décembre, 2013
Thailand

Study aims to investigate the effects of multi-mixed organic fertilizers on soil chemical properties and asparagus (Brock's Improved) yield and spear quality grown in Kamphaeng Saen soil series. These three fertilizers were the SMB formula, a mixed of biogas sludge (S), cattle manure (M), and oil palm empty fruit bunch (B), the SMC formula, a mixed of biogas sludge (S), cattle manure (M), and rice husk charcoal (C) and the PMP formula, a pig manure pellets. Field experiments were conducted using RCBD experimental design with 8 treatments, and 3 replications.
