With landholders owning multiple small and dispersed parcels, averaging 1.5 hectares, the situation demands urgent policy intervention.

Il vise la constitution d’unités de production d’un seul tenant ou à grandes parcelles, pour améliorer l’exploitation des propriétés, assurer la mise en valeur des espaces naturels ruraux et contribuer à l’aménagement du territoire communal ou intercommunal. Impliquant de nombreux acteurs, il trouve son origine au XVIIIème siècle et n’a cessé d’évoluer depuis.

The demand for additional agricultural land is expected to rise by approximately 50 per cent by 2050 on a global level, and agricultural land of high quality needs to be preserved to ensure future food security. However, agricultural land per capita is decreasing. One of the main reasons for this in the EU and globally is the building of houses or infrastructure on agricultural land. There is a possibility that the Swedish agricultural sector will grow in the future and supply more regions than its own territory with food due to, e.g., climate change.

The programme currently consists of three projects – the BMZ-commissioned Land Management and Decentralised Planning (LMDP) Project, the Enhanced Land Tenure Security (ELTeS) sub-project within a global programme on responsible land policy, as well as the German contribution to the Mekong River Land Governance (MRLG) Initiative.
