This bulletin highlights the breadth of DFID's current portfolio on land and prompts important questions about DFID’s work on land governance in the years to come.

Se presenta el desarrollo de un Sistema de Información Geográfica como potencial herramienta para la toma de decisiones que permitan mejorar el acceso al recurso hídrico en la región chaqueña de Salta. El proyecto marco se orienta a definir potenciales áreas prioritarias para la aplicación de tecnologías solares de desalinización de agua. El sistema ofrece la posibilidad de visualizar, consultar y evaluar espacialmente el acceso al agua para consumo humano y la calidad del recurso.

The population growth and the great amount of produced waste makes increasingly difficult to find optimal terrains that comply with all legal requirements.

Land change in the Greater Antilles differs markedly among countries because of varying socioeconomic histories and global influences. We assessed land change between 2001 and 2010 in municipalities (second administrative units) of Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Our analysis used annual land-use/land-cover maps derived from MODIS satellite imagery to model linear change in woody vegetation, mixed-woody/plantations and agriculture/herbaceous vegetation. Using this approach, we focused on municipalities with significant change (p ? 0.05).

La información se ha convertido en un elemento clave en los procesos organizacionales. The inability to monitor wetland drag coefficients at a regional scale is rooted in the difficulty to determine vegetation structure from remote sensing data. Based on the fact that the backscattering coefficient is sensitive to marsh vegetation structure, this paper presents a methodology to estimate the drag coefficient from a combination of SAR images, interaction models and ancillary data. We use as test case a severe fire event occurred in the Paraná River Delta (Argentina) at the beginning of 2008, when 10% of the herbaceous vegetation was burned up.

Los Sensores Remotos se han convertido en los últimos tiempos en una herramienta importante para la planificación territorial, debido a la originalidad metodológica con la cual operan y el amplio espectro de observación de la superficie terrestre. El número de algoritmos disponibles en la literatura científica, permiten tratar individualmente muchas de las coberturas terrestres y caracterizarlas en base a su comportamiento espectral. En el presente trabajo se han aplicado dos métodos de clasificación de imágenes: árboles de decisión o reglas y clasificación no supervisada.

This paper analyses the climate change projected for the near and distant future in South America using MRI/JMA (Japanese Meteorological Agency) global model simulations with resolutions of 20 and 60 km. Changes in mean climate, as well as in the annual cycles and interannual variability of temperature and precipitation are discussed. An analysis is also made of the uncertainties of the 60 km resolution model experiments. For the near and distant future, both, the 20 km and 60 km resolution MRI/JMA models project that temperature changes will be positive in all seasons.

Considers the cultural dimension of applying the land information system (LIS) concept to lands held under customary land tenure. The article recognizes that the LIS concept has been developed primarily to serve the needs of countries with a western-style land market where individual land rights are the norm. However, many countries where customary landholdings exist, or predominate, are also interested in establishing LISs to manage their land resources better. The article has three main sections.

A functioning land administration sector is the foundation for economic growth. Unfortunately, effective land registry and cadastral systems with national coverage exist in only a fraction of the world’s countries. Cadasta Foundation is working to overcome this challenge by developing simple digital tools and technology to help partners efficiently document, analyze, store, and share critical land and resource rights information.

The webinar Land Rights for Slum Dwellers in the East Indian State Odisha: Making technology work for the urban poor took place on 14 February, 2018. 

The webinar discussed anecdotes of the land rights policy in the state, application of innovative technology, processes and partnerships in the project execution and best practices followed in gaining rights for slum dwellers. 

This report provides a brief summary of the webinar dialogue and the main points that emerged.
