Open and Inclusive Land Governance Data for Climate Action and Accountability

The session explored the crucial role of open and inclusive land governance data in advancing climate action and ensuring accountability within the framework of the Global Land Agenda. The discussion began with an overview of how land data contributes to tracking progress towards global land objectives, highlighting the impact of collaborative efforts like the EC Data Partnership in shaping the Global Land Observatory (GLO). The presentation also underscored the importance of centering land data in global discourse. This was followed by an introduction to the EC Data Partnership, which aims to leverage data for monitoring biodiversity and supporting climate action, with a focus on how community-driven data can enrich these efforts. The session delved into the value of open data on large-scale land acquisitions, underscoring its potential to enhance accountability and guide responsible investments. Perceived tenure security emerged as a critical aspect, with data from Prindex offering insights into perceived risks, thus informing more resilient land policies. Additionally, the session highlighted the benefits of open land information systems and complete registries, advocating for greater transparency to foster a shared understanding of land governance practices. Finally, the discussion turned to the national-level implications of such data partnerships, with a focus on how organizations like IFAD and FAO can align their initiatives to support governments in creating effective land data frameworks.
