Dr Franklin Obeng-Odoom, Associate Professor in the Discipline of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki has recently reviewed a new book by one of South Africa's leading legal minds and land analysts Tembeka Ngcukaitobi . His review of Land Mattters: South Africa's Failed Land Reforms and the Road Ahead appears in the LSE Review of Books.

Tenure insecurity on the rise: 1.1 billion people at risk, Prindex report warns

At the Rome launch of the Global Comparative Report on Security of Property Rights for Land and Housing in 2024 presented by Prindex initiative on October 22, alarming new data revealed that 1.1 billion people worldwide feel insecure about their property rights, reflecting an escalating global crisis in housing and land tenure. The findings, derived from Prindex data, present a worrying increase from 19% of the adult population in the surveyed 108 countries in 2020 to 23% in 2024—meaning almost one in four adults now fear losing their homes or land.

Land-related disputes in India account for about two-thirds of all civil litigation, with Gujarat (98%), Himachal Pradesh (95%), Karnataka (92%) and Haryana (89%) leading the pack.[3] As much as 90 percent of land parcels are subject to legal dispute, creating insecurity of ownership and in the business climate, discouraging new investment and posing a challenge for governance.

En la COP26 de 2021, los gobiernos y las organizaciones filantrópicas privadas prometieron casi 2.000 millones de dólares para apoyar los derechos de tenencia de los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades locales. La COP27 del año pasado llevó a la creación de un nuevo fondo de "pérdidas y daños" para ayudar a las comunidades vulnerables a responder a los desastres climáticos.

Na COP26, em 2021, governos e filantropos privados prometeram quase US$ 2 bilhões para os povos indígenas e comunidades locais para combater o desmatamento. A COP27 do ano passado levou à criação de um novo fundo de "perdas e danos" para ajudar as comunidades vulneráveis a responder aos desastres climáticos.

Les deux derniers sommets mondiaux de l'ONU sur le climat ont été riches en promesses pour les Peuples autochtones. Lors de la COP26 en 2021, les gouvernements et les philanthropes privés se sont engagés à verser près de 2 milliards de dollars aux Peuples autochtones et aux communautés locales pour lutter contre la déforestation. La COP27 de l'année dernière a débouché sur la création d'un nouveau fonds "pertes et dommages" destiné à aider les communautés vulnérables à faire face aux catastrophes climatiques.
