Protesters seek land rights under Forest Rights Act, roll back of decision to give land to corporations for farming

Gujarat Police allegedly detained 19 members of Jamin Adhikar Jumbesh — a network of land rights organisations like Gujarat Dalit Sangathan, Saurashtra Dalit Sangathan and Adivasi Mahasabha Gujarat — on February 18, 2019, around 2 pm.

The revised draft bill, which gives the minister of public works the power to accept or reject compensation offers made by the owners of land that has been identified for expropriation, was published in the Government Gazette on 21 December 2018 after it’s publication for further comment was approved by Cabinet on 5 December 2018.

“Interested persons may submit written submissions on the draft expropriation bill 2019 not later than 60 days from the date of publication of this notice,” Minister Thulas Nxesi said.

The Land Matrix is a global and independent land monitoring initiative. Our goal is to facilitate an open development community of citizens, researchers, policy-makers and technology specialists to promote transparency and accountability in decisions over land and investment. A team of bachelors students from the 2016-2019 class of the European Law School Programme working with data collected by students from the 2017-2020 class of the European Law School Programme with the aim of creating a summary of the land laws for multiple countries.
